Mary Ann🐥Burrows · little bird poet

Are you looking for a little mystery this summer?

More than ten years ago, I wandered into an antique store and came home with an old wooden Mendel’s chocolate box.

Inside were dozens of handwritten postcards, some dating as far back as 1906.

Every few years, I’d open the box, read a handful, then close it again.

What stopped me wasn’t lack of interest. It was the feeling that there was a story here, and once I started, I’d want to know more about the people who wrote them.

Most of the postcards were exchanged between people living in Vancouver and Ladner, B.C., along with a few other places in Canada and the United States.

This summer, I’m finally opening the box for good, and I’d love your help following the trail.

Every week, we’ll read another postcard together and slowly uncover the stories behind them—their friendships, illnesses, Christmas greetings, potato harvests, train journeys, and ordinary days that somehow survived more than a hundred years.

I have no idea where this story is going. That’s the best part.

Curious? Next week, we’ll begin with the first postcard.
