Já não sabemos conviver?

Nos últimos dias, enquanto pensava sobre a questão da redução do consumo de vinho, deparei-me com alguns dados curiosos. Por exemplo, sabia que as gerações Millennial e Z são as que mais jantam fora? E que são, também, aqueles que parecem consumir menos vinho – os dados para esta última aferição não estão agregados em lugar algum, mas resultam de tendências que vão sendo reportadas por hotéis e restaurantes, nacional e internacionalmente.

Ou seja, os momentos de convívio social fora de casa, que durante décadas eram, precisamente, os mesmos em que brindávamos com algum vinho mais ou menos especial, em que aproveitávamos para conhecer novas referências e criar novas memórias, são agora os mesmos em que o vinho não aparece. “Nativos digitais”, os membros da geração Z são os que menos bebem vinho e, acredito eu, são também aqueles a quem mais falham muitas competências sociais, trocadas pelo scroll interminável que fazem nos seus ecrãs, sendo-lhes absolutamente indiferente quem ou o que está à sua frente.

Over the last few days, whilst thinking about the issue of declining wine consumption, I came across some interesting figures. For example, did you know that Millennials and Generation Z are the generations most likely to eat out for dinner? And that they also seem to be the ones consuming the least wine – the figures for this latter observation aren’t aggregated anywhere, but stem from trends being reported by hotels and restaurants, both nationally and internationally.

In other words, those moments of socialising away from home – which for decades were precisely the occasions when we’d raise a glass of wine, whether special or not, and take the opportunity to discover new wines and create new memories – are now the very occasions where wine is absent. As ‘digital natives’, members of Generation Z are the ones who drink the least wine and, I believe, are also the ones who lack many social skills the most, having swapped them for the endless scrolling they do on their screens, being utterly indifferent to who or what is in front of them.
