I roughly divide my comic-making process in two major phases.
Phase 1 is the brain-power part. This phase includes researching, conceptualizing, writing (and re-writing) the manuscript, making character design and selecting the color palette, thumbnailing, and sketching. All these steps require my undivided attention. Here, I am a hermit working in a very quiet space.
Phase 2 is all about execution. This is where I ink, flat, color, and do post-production work such as shading, highlights, and patterns. The biggest challenge in this phase is scheduling – I need to make sure I stay on top of schedule, executing a certain number of pages per day in order to finish by the deadline.
The biggest challenge here is that this phase is time-consuming, but the good news is that I don’t need much brain power in this phase.
So, I listen to a lot of audiobooks, podcasts, and music.
Today, I want to share with you some songs I absolutely love.
I call it: My Favorite Villain Songs.
Like Poor Unfortunate Souls from Little Mermaid.
(Actually, this song terrified me as a kid, but as an adult, I love it.)
Or In the Dark of the Night from Anastasia.
(Also terrifying, especially that Anastasia does not have the Disney shackle.)
How about the brilliantly made Your Idol from KPop Demon Hunters?
And finally, my all-time-favorite villain song that will forever be number 1 in my heart: Be Prepared from The Lion King.
(It’s cinema gold, and a perfect balance between spooky and humorous.)
Villain songs are so fun! They add a lot of textures and layers to the characters, and, let’s be honest, when I get too tired drawing, I get to practice the therapeutic villain laugh.
