Consider yourself extremely lucky if, during your lifetime, you come across a few people who make you think differently.
Derek Sivers, for me, is one of those people.
I don’t necessarily agree with everything he writes, and this piece is a good example of that. But I almost always find something in his thinking that makes me stop and question an assumption I had never really examined before.
His latest piece is about how he is building a house.
The approach is quite radical.
Instead of starting with a conventional idea of what a house should have, he is trying to build only around what he actually discovers he needs.
Some of his choices are probably too extreme for me. But I found the thinking behind them very useful.
How much of what we do is based on our own needs, and how much of it comes from simply accepting how things are normally done?
There is something interesting about looking at a problem from first principles and asking what you would do if there were no standard answer to begin with.
That is what stayed with me after reading this.
One of Derek’s more recent pieces, and definitely worth exploring.
