One of the things that was supposed to be on the agenda for this special session was redistricting. That is no longer on the agenda. There will eventually be new maps, but not this session. Governor Kemp and Lt. Governor Burt Jones have both said they disagree with the decision to remove redistricting from the agenda. This issue will not be taken up in this special session.
The other main purpose for this special session is to address that on July 1st QR codes on ballots becomes illegal, yet Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has taken no steps to comply with the law since it was passed in 2024.
The main issue here is that the legislature made QR codes illegal and Brad Raffensperger chose to just ignore the law entirely. Now we are 5.5 months away from the November election. The legislature really should have seen this issue on the horizon and done something about it already. Now, practically, it is not possible to get new machines for this election or even change the software to get rid of QR codes. So the solution proposed is to just delay the deadline to prior to the 2028 election.
The deadline will have to be pushed because of these circumstances, yet the legislature should then require a hand count of the top races. If we have deemed there to be enough issues with the machines to scrap them, then their issues persist now. Hackable machines are being used to scan QR codes that voters can’t read and ensure accurately reflects their vote.
The solution here is to require a hand count of the readable portion of the ballot in November. So you can read the selection on the ballot, ensure it is what you intended, and that is what gets counted instead of a QR code that only machines can read.
Requiring a hand count of the November election is what is needed right now. The House, Senate, and Governor might be satisfied with the bill, SB 3EX, as is, but the people are not. We need better. We must demand better. If they were to add in a component requiring a hand count, however, I would withdraw my criticism as that is the best thing we could do right now.
I would encourage you to talk with your Senator and Representative and let them know that requiring a hand count of the top races in November would provide you a much higher degree of confidence in our electoral system.
Say something like this:
“Understanding we are in a tough spot on these issues, SB 3 EX makes some degree of sense. However, it would give us all much more confidence in the legitimacy of the process if the bill would also mandate a hand count of the top races (U.S. Senate, Governor, Lt. Governor) of the readable portion of the ballot, rather than a machine count of the unreadable QR codes, in November. If this does not occur, I would ask you to vote NO on SB 3 EX.”
Our Election Integrity friends are putting together a rally on this issue tomorrow. Our elected officials are hearing a lot from the other side right now, so I think it would be good for as many people to show up to this rally tomorrow and let them hear our side speak.
