High refresh rate screens are pretty common on Windows laptops these days, and for good reason. Whether you're gaming on your laptop or not, a faster panel makes for a significantly better user experience across various tasks. The only catch, however, is that it also makes it difficult for you to get good battery life.
Thankfully, there's an easy setting you can toggle to fix that. You still get the benefits of a high refresh rate screen when your laptop is plugged in, but if you're on the go, battery life gets prioritized.
120Hz feels great until the battery percentage disagrees
Every time your screen refreshes, it takes power, and a 120Hz or 144Hz panel is refreshing twice or more as often as a standard 60Hz display. That constant redrawing adds up fast, increasing display power draw anywhere between 25 and 40 percent, with higher refresh rates like 165Hz or 240Hz pushing that even higher between 50 and 80 percent.
Notebookcheck's testing on a Lenovo ThinkPad, one of the better Windows laptops when it comes to battery life, found that switching a 165Hz panel down to 60Hz stretched runtime from 7 hours 30 minutes to a full 9 hours in a Wi-Fi browsing test, with no other changes made. That's nearly 20 percent more battery life from a single settings tweak that takes less than 10 seconds.
The reason this is such an underrated fix is that most people never touch this setting after they buy their laptop. Manufacturers ship high refresh rate panels running at their maximum speed by default, and Windows itself buries this option deep enough in its settings that nobody bothers looking for it.
Where to actually find the setting
Two clicks deep, and Windows never points you there
You don't need any third-party tool for this. Right-click on your desktop and choose Display settings, or head over to the Windows Settings app, then System, then Display. From there, scroll down to Advanced display under Related settings.
This page lists your connected monitor along with a dropdown labeled Choose a refresh rate, showing every rate your panel supports. Pick your preferred number, hit Keep changes within the 15-second confirmation window, and you're done. There's also a legacy router through Display adapter properties if you want the old-school Windows dialog, but the Advanced display page is faster and cleaner.
The smarter option: Dynamic Refresh Rate
Windows tries to guess when you need the smooth stuff
If your laptop's screen and GPU driver support it, Windows 11 has a built-in feature called Dynamic Refresh Rate, or DRR, that does the switching for you automatically. Instead of locking your display to one rate, DRR drops it to 60Hz during static, low-motion tasks like typing an email or reading a document, then ramps it up to full speed the moment you start scrolling, watching videos, or doing any other type of active work.
Microsoft designed this specifically to give you smooth motion when it matters, and battery savings when it doesn't, without you having to think about it, much like the adaptive refresh rate features you see on smartphones. You'll find the toggle in the same Advanced display menu, right next to the refresh rate dropdown, but it only appears if your hardware actually supports variable refresh rates at 120Hz or above.
Just like most features Microsoft designs, DRR isn't perfect either. Constant switching between refresh rates can introduce a slight stutter, and in some cases, it might not even give you the battery savings at all. It also doesn't always work as intended, and I've had plenty of instances where the feature simply did not drop down my laptop's refresh rate when running on battery power.
Will you notice the downgrade?
Scrolling gets jittery, typing does not
If you're used to working on high refresh rate displays, you'll immediately notice the drop to 60Hz; there's no way around that. Even if you're actively scrolling through a webpage, dragging windows around, or doing any other basic work on your machine, that lower refresh rate will make everything feel more jittery.
For writing documents, browsing with minimal scrolling, video calls, or watching a movie, the difference is less noticeable as none of these tasks depend on high frame-to-frame motion to look good. That's the reason why 60Hz was the industry standard for decades before high refresh rate panels became common, and why productivity-focused sessions barely suffer from the switch. But for anything else, you will miss the smoothness a high refresh rate panel brings. Just know that you're doing this in favor of battery life.
A simple rule of thumb
Treat refresh rate like a brightness slider
It's best to treat your refresh rate like your brightness slider: crank it up when you need it, and dial it down when you don't. If you're running on battery and doing writing, research, or general browsing, drop to 60Hz or turn on Dynamic Refresh Rate and let Windows handle it. Save your panel's full 120Hz, 144Hz, or 165Hz for when you're plugged into the wall, gaming, or doing something where the motion clarity actually matters.
It costs you nothing in usability during the moments you're saving power, except slightly less pleasing animations to look at, and it can realistically buy you an extra hour or two of battery life on a long writing session or a flight. All from a setting buried two clicks deep in Windows.
