If you own a 3D printer and have ever wanted a scale replica of the Mars rover or an Apollo landing site sitting on your desk, NASA has got you covered. The space agency hosts an enormous, free library of 3D models covering spacecraft, satellites, landing sites, and even celestial objects.
A big part of this catalog is print-ready, meaning you can download any of these models, slice them, and print them. Additionally, since they come from a US government agency, most of these carry no copyright restrictions for personal or educational use.
What exactly is on offer
A mission archive, not a typical model repository
The 3D Resources hub is organized around missions and topics rather than file types, so browsing will feel more like exploring a mission archive than a typical model repository. You will find entries for things like the Advanced Composition Explorer, the Agena Target Vehicle, the Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere satellite, and detailed Apollo 11 through 16 landing site reconstructions, each with its own dedicated page.
Some assets are purely visual and provided as glTF, GLB, or Blender files meant only for renders and interactive web viewers. Others are explicitly built for a 3D printer, delivered as STL files broken into individual parts. The rover models are the standout example: NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory released print-ready STL files and full assembly instructions for a simplified Mars 2020 Perseverance rover, requiring 39 separate printed parts that snap together into mobility systems, robotic arms, a chassis, wheels, and even a model of the radioisotope thermoelectric generator that powers the real machine.
Where the files actually live
Two links open at once, one site, one repo
The science.nasa.gov 3D Resources page is the main hub for these models today. NASA's older nasa3d.arc.nasa.gov address, which used to function as a separate technical viewer and download site, now redirects straight into the same hub, so there's really just one place to browse from. The collection is also mirrored on GitHub as a repository called NASA-3D-Resources, which gives you version-controlled access to the entire catalog.
For the Perseverance rover specifically, the STL files sit on the science.nasa.gov hub while the GitHub repo hosts the matching assembly instructions, so builders typically need both links open at once. Individual mission pages, like the one for the Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover, also host downloadable glTF and Blender files if you want a screen-accurate render rather than a printable object.
It is worth noting that not every asset on the hub is printable. Many are optimized just for visualization or education rather than 3D printing or physical fabrication of any form. Checking the file format listed on each model's page before downloading will save you time and headache.
The licensing question
Free to print, not free to imply NASA's blessing
NASA content, including the textures and polygon data used to build these 3D models, is generally not subject to copyright in the United States and can be used freely for educational, informational, and even personal web purposes. That permission extends to hobbyist 3D printing, provided you're not implying NASA's endorsement of a commercial product or using their logos and insignia.
If you plan to sell these prints rather than keep them on a shelf, NASA's commercial and merchandise guidelines apply, and attribution to NASA or JPL-Caltech as the source is expected regardless of use case.
Beyond rovers
A hundred models deep, and rovers are just the start
As mentioned before, the catalog stretches well beyond simple rovers and satellites. NASA has documented over a hundred printable models across categories that include Saturn rocket components, International Space Station tools, the Orion crew capsule, and multiple Apollo landing sites rendered as physical terrain models.
The 3D printing community has also picked up where official NASA releases left off. Sites like Printables and Makerworld host derivative rover builds, including an articulated 1:42 scale Perseverance model built by referencing NASA's official 3D data and JPL photography.
Getting started
39 parts, one rover, zero rocket science required
For your first print, I'd recommend going with the Perseverance rover kit as it's the most rewarding starting point on account of the plenty of JPL engineering documentation available for it. The part count itself gives you a real sense of how the actual rover's subsystems fit together.
Start by downloading the STL files and pulling the matching assembly guides before slicing anything, since parts like the wheels and RTG housing depend on correct orientation for strength. Given how many parts are involved, batch printing in a durable filament and dry-fitting subassemblies before final glue-up will save you from redoing a lot of work.
