A new book about MAiD has just been released, and we think it’s going to be an important one.
We had a chance to read an advance copy of George S. Takach’s The Book of MAiD: Understanding Medical Assistance in Dying in Canada, and we’ll be picking up our own physical copy soon.
One thing we’ve learned from writing MAiD in Canada is just how difficult it is to explain MAiD well. It’s a complex and nuanced topic, with a lot to understand—not just about the law and eligibility, but about the decisions, conversations, and questions that can come with it.
Takach has done a remarkable job of bringing all of that together in one accessible book.
The Book of MAiD covers the essentials of how MAiD works in Canada, but it goes well beyond simply explaining the rules. Takach explores the circumstances in which someone might consider MAiD, the questions people may want to think about for themselves, and the conversations that can happen with family and loved ones along the way. He gives readers the information they need without telling them what they should think or what choices they should make.
That may be what we appreciated most about the book. It recognizes that understanding MAiD isn’t just about knowing who qualifies or how the process works. It’s also about understanding what the choice can mean for the person considering it and for the people around them.
If you’re looking for one place to start—to understand the basics of MAiD in Canada, the issues worth thinking about, and the conversations worth having—this is an excellent place to begin.
