If you asked us to describe the perfect summer afternoon on Cape Cod, it wouldn’t start at the beach.
It would start afterwards.
The beach bag has been unpacked. The windows are open. You’ve changed out of your swimsuit and into a linen dresss. The sun is still high enough to shine warmth on your face, but the rush of the day has quietly passed.
And our favorite part of the day begins - gathering the little things that somehow turn an ordinary evening into one you’ll remember.
A market basket over your shoulder.
A Janessa Leone hat covering your wavy beach hair.
Stopping somewhere simply because it looked inviting.
Buying vegetables you didn’t plan on buying because they looked too beautiful to leave behind.
We’ve always believed the best summer evenings begin long before anyone sits down at the table.
Our first stop is almost always a farm.
Either Bartlett’s Farm in West Barnstable or Love Farm in Dennis.
And our rule of thumb - buy more than you planned because these fruits and vegetables are the best on the Cape.
And since you’re already out, why stop there?
One of our favorite parts of what we call a “gathering afternoon” is wandering through a local shop or antique store without looking for anything in particular.
Gathering at Home in Dennis is one of our favorites, and the Harwich Antiques Center is always a good idea. (If you’re looking for more vintage on Cape Cod - tap here to read all our recommendations).
Sometimes you leave with nothing.
Sometimes it’s a vintage brass candlestick.
Sometimes it’s the perfect ceramic bowl you’ll use every summer for the next twenty years.
The best homes aren’t purchased all at once. They’re collected. Slowly. One afternoon at a time.
Then comes our favorite part: You head home. The windows are open. Someone pours a glass of wine. Music starts playing somewhere in the background.
Dinner isn’t rushed because there’s nowhere else to be.
There’s something incredibly satisfying about washing vegetables that were picked just hours earlier. About garlic slowly softening in olive oil. About tearing fresh basil at the very last moment because somehow it always tastes better that way.
No reservation has ever quite compared.
Maybe that’s why we love summer on Cape Cod so much.
It’s never really been about checking things off a list.
It’s about creating afternoons that quietly become evenings.
Gathering beautiful ingredients.
Gathering beautiful objects.
Gathering the people you love around the same table.
And realizing, somewhere between the farm stand and dessert, that you’ve had one of the best days of summer without ever planning it.
No wait list. No parking. No rush. Just the two best seats on Cape Cod - the ones waiting at home.
