I think people mean different things when they talk about non-dual consciousness.
And I’m not saying they’re wrong. Whatever helps a person open spiritually has value.
For some people, non-duality means realizing that everything is connected. Duality, for them, means separation: consciousness trapped inside the skull, the self isolated from the world, mind cut off from matter, God somewhere “out there.”
Then they have a spiritual experience. They see that consciousness is not merely local. It’s not just a private event produced by the brain. It’s everywhere. It pervades everything. And once they see that, everything shifts.
That’s a real opening.
But I think there’s something deeper still.
There is a level that defies definition because definition itself can’t reach it. It doesn’t merely transcend the subjective/objective split. It goes beyond the whole structure in which subject and object can even appear.
It goes beyond “I am aware of this.”
It goes beyond awareness itself.
You could call it the Ground of Being. You could call it pure undifferentiated awareness. You could call it Source. In Kabbalistic language, you could call it Ain Soph Aur: the limitless light.
But even those names are only gestures. They point toward something that comes before consciousness, before presence and absence, before oneness and twoness, before anything can be perceived or known.
This is why the experience can feel like a kind of death.
Not physical death, necessarily. But the death of the observer. The death of the one who stands apart and says, “I am having this experience.”
You go in, and you come back.
And the coming back matters.
Because if you went in permanently, there would be no “you” left to report anything. But to enter that domain and return is like a complete reset of the soul. It is baptismal. It washes the whole structure clean.
And that is how you know the experience was real.
Not because you can explain it.
Because everything changes.
So when people ask whether there is an “absence of self” or a “presence of God,” even that language feels too late. Absence and presence still require an observer. They still belong to consciousness. They still assume someone standing there, noticing what is or isn’t present.
But this is before that.
It is not oneness.
It is not emptiness.
It is not fullness.
It is prior to all of them.
It is Source.
And the one thing I will say about it is this: it is not vague, soft, or merely peaceful. It is a field of unlimited, all-powerful energy. When you touch it, it rattles your bones.
It’s like grabbing a high-voltage power line.
Except instead of killing you, it brings you back more alive than you were before.
