Nowadays I regularly put albums on Bandcamp as a free (if you wish*) download. Obviously I’ve released so much music that my discography might feel quite impenetrable, and I’m hoping to create an easier entry this way.
* it’s actually ‘name-your-price’ - this way it stays in peoples Bandcamp collections etc... but paying zero cash is 100% okay!
This time: Bij Wat Ook Moog Gebeuren, with Leo Fabriek and Gareth Davis
And before I forget: the album is now also on streaming platforms for the first time!
I had been working with drummer Leo Fabriek and bass clarinetist Gareth Davis before. And as a trio we released the Shivers album on Miasmah, in May 2014. I can’t recall if this soundtrack was created befor or after Shivers, but our modus operandi was pretty much the same: Leo and Gareth recorded improvised parts, and sent these to me for editing, processing, etc. Those familiar with my music know that this is a favorite way of working for me; to have others record ‘building materials’ for me to construct new music with.
Both Leo and Gareth knew film maker Dirk Beers, and after Dirk asked me for the score for his soccer documentary Bij Wat Ook Mogen’ Gebeuren, it was quickly decided to work as a trio. And it was a great match!
Shivers is defenitly a gloomy, dystopian album. BWOMG sounds more hopeful, more open, in line with the subject of the film – about the dreams of young sportsmen, aiming for the stars. There’s recurring themes and instruments, corresponding with the three soccer players followed in the film: Anwar, Bryan, and Marciano.
The UK label Facture released a lavish physical (2 x 3” CDr) edition of the album in 2020. There’s a few copies for sale on Discogs, for those interested.
The film itself can still be streamed online, right here. There’s no subtitles though, so it’s probably only enjoyable for Dutchies…
