Happy August! Last week we traveled to the East Coast for a special Centenarion’s birthday. The big bash was held along the border of Delaware, just outside of Philly. We stayed late into the summer night; drinking beers and munching on classic cheese & pepperoni pizzas from Nick’s Pizza Parlor.
Legend has it, that back in the day Frank Sinatra smooched this little 100 year old lady on the lips. Betty-Anne (my husband’s Aunt) hired a Frank Sinatra impersonator to perform, tux and all. There was even a little kiss at the end of his act. Luck be a lady!

If you are throwing a big party and deciding where to allocate budget (in this economy), your most underestimated hire is a bartender / busser. They don’t need to be a mixologist (unless the budget permits). Their duties are simple: show up put-together (give instruction for collard shirt if necessary), pour the wine, tidy up trash from tables, and do any end-of-the-night dish.
Before the party starts, I recommend that YOU (or a trusted family member) buys all the booze. Extra credit if it’s from a place that allows returns. Last week, we filled a beverage dispenser with ice and made a big batch of Aperol Spritz. This allowed for quality control (yes it’s possible to f*&K up an Aperol Spritz) and a good flow system for the bartender.

I’ve worked on projects in Philly, closed down Irish pubs in Philly, and eaten entirely too much (good food) in Philly. We love Philly!
Philadelphia was built like a European city in the 17th century (our cousins’ place was built in 1875, 10 years after slavery was abolished) with very walkable streets and classic architecture. The grid layout was designed to ensure order, easy waterfront access, and prevent overcrowding. Philly is undeniably a sports town and there’s a constant ‘collective effervescence’ in the air.
