THE TREE IN THE WOOD
Once, I wished for a song to sing at bedtime to my baby.
I wished for a song that was also a spell: a spell to please sleep; a magic prayer to rest.
And in the dark of the baby’s room I needed a song that was a protecting, eternal space for me (always tired) to also lie down in.
One day, I found that song when I was looking for something else. It appeared suddenly and ordinarily, like new leaves on a tree.
In October 2023, I recorded it in an old riding hall with Joel Frederiksen playing guitar. And I’m so proud to present this spell of a song to you today.
The Tree in the Wood is the first single of Lullula Music’s debut album of songs for babies and children, The Birds. I hope it opens a protecting space for you.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
LYDIA MAHNKOPF
Soprano, educator, and mother of two, Lydia is the founder of Lullula Music. Lydia has recorded as a soloist for harmonia mundi France, Edel Classics, WDR, SONY, and others, including a GRAMMY Award- and ECHO Klassik Prize-winning album for CPO. In addition to performing, she is also the producer of The Birds, under the Lullula label.
JOEL FREDERIKSEN
Lutenist, bass, and artistic director of Ensemble Phoenix Munich, Joel Frederiksen has performed with leading figures and ensembles in early music. His recordings for harmonia mundi and others have received the German Record Critics' Prize and the Echo Prize. A Day with Suzanne - A Tribute to Leonard Cohen, Spiegel Bestseller and Opus Classic nominee, was released by SONY/Deutsche Harmonia Mundi in January 2023.
THE BIRDS
The Birds is Lullula Music’s debut full-length album, featuring The Tree in the Wood and 19 other songs for babies and children.
It’s a musical storybook of songs, lullabies, and rhymes for everyone, but particularly for ages 0-5.
The Birds will be released everywhere on 20 June 2025 and in a limited-edition double-LP (pictured!). Pressed in Berlin on 180g vinyl.
