Louis Bijl de Vroe · louis’ letter of news

Hello there,

We (or at least half the planet) have arrived at the shortest days of the year: the darkness still growing, and, at the same time, we are closer than ever to the returning light.

The night is darkest just before the dawn:

“At the shortest day the seed lies deepest in the earth, yet there the invisible sun begins its ascent. Thus the wise know that the greatest darkness is the mother of the greatest light.” – Paracelsus, Archidoxis Magica (Book VII, on the winter solstice)

Short days, little energy.

Time to let go.

A short letter.

In it: a (Dutch) conversation I had with Jaap Voigt on the archetypal cycle of life, and a meditation on the art spirit.

Little to read, a bit more to listen to.

Below, an introduction to the Jaap Voigt conversation. Below that, an introduction and the recording of a meditation on the art spirit.

Art is an interpretation of a miracle we can never explain

The artist simply has to find the gain in the work itself, not outside it

I was reading Robert Henri’s 1923 book The Art Spirit, and that line struck a chord.

This is the I Ching, some 3000 years earlier:

The wise man gladly leaves fame to others. He does not seek to have credited to himself things that stand accomplished, but hopes to release active forces; that is, he completes his works in such a manner that they may bear fruit for the future.

That reminded me of a quote by—I don’t know whothat I have taped to a wall in my apartment:

Don’t get attached to objects

and outcomes

Stay within and relax

Be prepared to lose rather than

struggle

Only ego, only individuality, feels

incomplete

In true being, nothing is ever

lacking

And that seemed like enough nudges for me to weave them together in a meditation:

And then today, I came across this line from The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury:

Science is no more than an investigation of a miracle we can never explain, and art is an interpretation of that miracle

Throw it all in the mix, and I believe we might just have quite the tasty Christmas recipe:

Christmas

a good time to remember:

do NOT get attached to outcomes.

a good time to settle into the not-knowing of it all.

the deepest truth there is.

Stop trying to understand it all -

the mystery,

the miracle we can never explain.

We only have

to live it.

-

Yeah.

-

Easier said than done.

-

Let’s try anyway.

Enjoy!

And -

don’t get attached to outcomes!

Thank you for reading (or listening to) this letter.

I hope you can savor “the greatest darkness” of the year, and enjoy a blissful dawn of the year.

Love,

from

Louis
