I really love sketching flowers, wild ones if possible, but also whatever is out in the garden. This fiery orange montbretia is both; a wild interloper that we didn’t plant, but also a garden hybrid that has got out of control in this part of Ireland and has re-introduced itself in most gardens around here.

As it was such a lovely day, I sketched outside next to the flowers, rather than cutting some to bring inside. This way I had more choice when selecting which flowers to draw and in some cases could make a composite flower stem by focusing on different flowers from different stems (after all, no-one will know!).
