Emma Lehman · Los Audio

I’ve essentially been celebrating all month – I know so many June birthdays that I’ve been counting each of my friends’ parties as my own. It works quite well: no planning, setup, cleanup, or scheduling, and most of my friends are there already.

Plus, I and all my fellow June 2000 babies have collectively decided that those FIFA “We are 26” billboards in LA are celebrating the fact that we have turned 26.

Even my TAP card says it.

It was a very expensive celebratory campaign, but I hope you’ve all enjoyed it.

Giardinetti has launched as a new, non-commercial playground dedicated to short audio creations in Italian. The project offers an open space for experimentation with short-form audio, inviting creators to play, take risks, and listen.

How it works

• Every two months Giardinetti issues a creative prompt and invites participants to

submit a short audio piece in Italian in response.

• Submissions are listened to collectively and published on the site, gradually building a shared archive of brief audio works.

Giardinetti was founded by a group of independent audio producers who wanted to create a space for experimentation outside market pressures, where works don’t need to belong to a series or conform to preset formats. Inspired by successful initiatives abroad such as Small Audio Art and Audio Playground, the project aims to make entry into the world of audio accessible to everyone and to provide a safe environment for trying new things for the sheer joy of creation.

First prompt and deadline:

• Prompt: Things people do in bathrooms.

• Submission deadline: 15 July 2026.

Visit https://giardinetti.carrd.co for submission guidelines and updates or email talktome@cristinamarrs.com.

Submissions are now open for the International Women’s Podcast Awards (IWPA), hosted by Lauren Passell-led Tink Media.

The IWPAs celebrate and uplift women’s voices across podcasting and are proudly queer and trans inclusive. Open to indie creators and established audio companies alike, the awards are size agnostic, with 11 categories focused on intention rather than audience numbers.

Categories include comedy gold, best storytelling, artistry in advertising, and absolute honesty.

Entries are open through July 31, 2026, and each submission is $50. Scholarship options are available. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony in Toronto during the Fall (likely early October).

You can enter now or email awards@tinkmedia.co for more information.

Los Audio reader and producer Jesse Dukes sent along this wonderful opportunity:

Last year I was a recipient of a Kapor investigative reporting fellowship, which allowed me to expand an existing reporting project. It was an excellent experience: flexible structure, solid funding, and a thoughtful, engaged cohort.

The Kapor Foundation focuses on equity in technology and works across multiple areas to make the development and deployment of powerful technologies more inclusive. They offer a $35,000, one-year fellowship for journalists working on AI governance, AI and education, and innovation. The foundation also concentrates its efforts in specific tech hubs, where it has supported initiatives aimed at closing equity gaps in entrepreneurship and access to well-paying tech jobs.

There are both research and reporting fellowships. If you’re working on something in this space, it’s worth considering.

Applicants should have a strong track record, a letter of interest from a publishing partner, and a clear, well-developed reporting plan.

If you can put those pieces together, I think you’d have a strong shot.

The Art of the Crossfade is a live multimedia experience presented by Professor Josh Kun and DJ/Producer J.PERIOD that explores how music can connect people across cultures, generations, and communities. At the center of the experience is the crossfader — the horizontal slider on a DJ mixer that allows two songs to blend without erasing either. In the hands of a DJ, different sounds, histories, and perspectives can coexist to create something entirely new.

Using live DJ performance, storytelling, visuals, and conversation, The Art of the Crossfade explores how music can become a bridge between people and ideas — showing how connection does not require sameness, and how our differences can become the foundation for creativity, understanding, and community.

Part live mix, part cultural conversation, and part behind-the-scenes journey into the art of DJing, the program invites audiences to experience music as more than entertainment: as a powerful tool for connection.

An overview of experimental options for audio producers to make visually compelling video. Bonus, they’re fast and cheap!

Video podcasting does NOT mean you are doomed to film people talking into microphones. This moment is an opportunity to invent a whole new medium and discover what video podcasting could be for narrative producers.

Do you want your show’s video and social clips to have their own unique visual identity, instead of looking like every other video podcast out there? There are ways to take your podcast’s video to the next level – where it adds to the experience, without taking away from the audio – and you don’t have to spend a billion dollars.

In this course, drawing on experimental cinema, video games, and underground rave culture, filmmaker and podcast producer Andrew Callaway (99% Invisible, You Feeling This, Reply All, This American Life) will open up some of his project files and show you video techniques you can use that will not dominate audio-first storytelling.

This is not a comprehensive tutorial on video editing. Instead, you will get introduced to specific techniques within programs such as Adobe Premiere, Character Animator, After Effects, Resolume, Descript, TouchDesigner, & Reaper.

You will leave the first class with concrete ideas, references, and techniques to help you dream up a video version of your show that you can be excited about – and two weeks later, you’ll have the opportunity to present some of your work in a hands-on feedback session where Andrew will give you more customized tips and tricks for your shows and clips.
