“New York in layers” is a series of drawings made in November 2024 during a few days in NY. The style is inspired by Stuart Davis, my favourite American painter.
I’ve been fascinated by New York. It’s a crazy city, where everything is overlapped on top of something else, creating layers: buildings, metro lines, traffic, music, parks, people. And this is what I wanted to capture with these illustrations.
I wanted to stay true to my original sketches and respect the very gestural shapes created on paper. I chose a brush that was more similar to a “marker”, and I traced my sketches with all the imperfections, the indecisions, the errors.
I think it’s the best way to keep something unique and personal.
Thanks for reading, as always.
Ciao,
Loris.
