Kickstarter: early thoughts

First thing first: have you looked at the Kickstarter campaign for Loop Unlimited?

So I launched my first kickstarter last Wednesday (12/02) at 17:30. It is not my first crowdfunding attempt but it's the first one on KS and the first with a non-French product. We are Sunday 16th when I write these words, 4 days in the campaign, 75% of the time remaining.

According to statistics and existing metrics, here is what we can predict on KS campaign:

  • The curves of sales are usually U-shape (i.e. people pledge in the first days and the last days of the campaign) or a +90° J-shape (i.e. people massively pledge at the beginning of the campaign)

  • If you multiply the first 24h by 3 and/or the first 3 hours by 5, you should have a rough estimation of how much money your project could raise (although there are always exceptions, of course).

If I try to apply these predictive statistics to my project, it looks really bad. Like epic proportions failure bad. My sales shape looks like a _-shape more any +90°J or U. In the first 3 hours, I had 3 backers, in the first 24 hours, I had 9 backers, sooooo… Not great for the final numbers if you apply the trends.

BUT! This is not the point. Loop Unlimited is a learning project for me. Good or bad, the outcomes will hold valuable knowledge I can bring to my next project - the Loop ‘n’ Loot Core Rulebook - in order to make it a success. And I already learned a lot. For example,

  • 23 people wanted to be notified of the launch. After 15 hours, I had maybe 5-6 pledgers. I have not mean to know if they were pledging after being notified but the early conversion rate looks pretty weak (about 20%). But maybe it’s a number I should keep in mind for the Core Rulebook kickstarter.

  • I did not communicate on a specific launch hour, because I was afraid to miss it as I last-minute reviewed the KS text. In a way, I’m glad I did not share my internal 17:00 launch hour as I postponed it by 30 minutes. But, next time, let people know the launch hour so they can maybe plan around it rather than waiting for the notification email.

  • I messed up my digital pledge: for some reason it was considered “all gone” when the KS started but I only caught and fixed it after 12 hours. Not good, and not sending the right signal for first time pledgers. Oh well, this is how you learn. I don’t know what happened.

  • I also messed up my physical pledge, which included costs for shipping… Luckily, I only had 8 people to contact and warn them to change their pledge to the correct one. What an embarrassing mistake. But as I said, it’s a learning experience.

  • So far, 50% of pledgers discovered the project via Kickstarter algorithm. I don’t know what to make of that information yet, especially with only so few pledgers, but I wanted to store it for later.

  • As of today, 50 people are following the project and I have a 6% conversion rate. How will I use this information? I don’t know yet, but analyzing data is fun.

  • So far, no one has pledged for a PDF

All in all, it’s a slow start so:
