You wake up tired.
Coffee gets you to 10am. By 2pm your energy dips, brain fog sets in, and you’re reaching for another caffeine hit or something sugary.
By the evening, you’re running on empty instead of doing the things you actually want to do.
Somewhere along the way, many of us were told this is simply what getting older looks like.
As a bioscientist, I don’t believe that’s the full story.
When you understand the biology of how your cells produce, use and lose energy, it becomes clear that low energy is often less about age - and more about modern life throwing our systems out of sync.
And of course, there are real-life factors too - pressure at work, young children keeping you up at night, or caring for aging parents.
Whatever your situation, this week I want to show you how you can work with your biology to:
Maximise your energy
Think and perform more clearly throughout the day
Have more capacity for the people and things that matter most
While also supporting healthier aging over time
Energy is the body’s ability to perform work.
That includes thinking, walking, breathing, digesting food, repairing tissues, and keeping your heart beating.
Everything your body does depends on it.
The energy currency your body uses is called ATP (adenosine triphosphate).
Think of it as tiny rechargeable batteries inside every cell.
ATP is produced inside mitochondria - microscopic “power plants” found throughout your body. They take fuel from food (glucose and fats) and oxygen, and convert it into usable energy.
When this system works efficiently, you generally feel clear-headed, physically energised, and mentally sharp.
When it doesn’t, you may feel tired, foggy, and more reliant on quick fixes like caffeine.
Most energy issues after 40 aren’t simply about producing less energy.
They’re about how efficiently your body produces it, uses it, and how much is wasted along the way.
Modern life creates countless small drains on the system - some obvious, and others you probably wouldn’t immediately associate with energy.
Below, I’ll walk you through a simple 3-step lifestyle blueprint covering everything from sleep and blood sugar, to psychological wellbeing, to help you rebuild steadier, more reliable energy - distilled from years of research into a framework you can use today.
