Welcome to Margin Notes—real talk about the writing life - no gatekeeping, just honest conversations about craft, creativity, and what it really takes to be a writer.
Two quick reminders before we get started:
You can sign up for our September workshop, What Was Passed Down: Writing Essays from Instinct, Memory, and Lineage, with Khalisa Rae. If enough people register, we have the option of opening up more seats. Class begins September 12 and runs three weeks.
Want some scheduled writing time? We have our Friday Park & Write tomorrow at 4p ET. Register ahead of time & mark it in your calendar! We meet up to three times a week.
Our last Margin Note spoke about “the notebook question.” What are you using? I’m using really cheap, lightweight notebooks that I can carry with ease. I rotate between 3 pens, but it’s really whatever is closest to me at the time. Did you try out walking around for a week with your book and noticing things? How’d it go?

This week will be short and sweet. We’re now in week three of Sentence Club and I’m curious to know how your reading has been going so far? Emma asked in the chat (you’re welcome to join us if you’re a subscriber) what activities have you attempted from our first selection, Writing Down the Bones? I’ve started filling in a notebook, but after the last two weeks I’m running behind, which means I’ll be working as best as I can to finish it up. What about you?
Month 1: Chapters 1 - 21
Week 1: Introduction - Artistic Ability
Week 2: A List of Topics for Writing Practice - Tap the Water Table
Week 3: We Are Not the Poem - Obsessions
Week 4: The Power of Detail - Listening
A note about our commonplace book: it’s coming! The plan is to work on it next week and have something up and running to share with you all real soon. We’ll make mention of it in the chat, but we’d like a show of hands if you’re participating and we can send a separate email to you once it’s live. Just leave a comment this week and look out for an email next week.
