This edition of Own or Loan, we invite you to read beyond disability awareness and toward disability justice. These books examine disability through the lens of justice, care, chronic illness, neurodivergence, embodiment, and interdependence. They ask us to imagine a world where access is not an afterthought, care is understood as a collective responsibility, and disabled people are recognized not for their limitations but for the ways they continue to reshape our understanding of community, creativity, and liberation.
Disability is not simply an individual experience or medical diagnosis—it is shaped by the systems we live within. For Black, Brown, Indigenous, and other historically marginalized communities, disability cannot be separated from racism, colonialism, immigration, environmental injustice, economic inequality, and unequal access to healthcare. These realities shape who receives care, who is believed, who is protected, and most critically, who is too often left behind.
