Gap Year has been out since February 3, and it’s been non-stop action since then. That day, I took a pause from posting and sharing about “the release!” to have lunch with some friends and celebrate!
On February 4th, my good friend and fellow author, Mary Taggart, hosted me on her IG live. I had such a great time talking to Mary about my book and the theme of reinventing oneself at any age. She asked me questions about my own journey of reinvention from film industry executive to physical therapist to author. We talked about how my story converges with my main character, Jane, because she also takes a left turn in her life to figure out who she wants to be in her second chapter. When I sat down to write it, I hoped it would resonate with many people, and so far, it seems it has!
On the 5th was my first book signing at Pages- a Bookstore in Manhattan Beach, CA. I was so nervous because I didn’t know what to expect. Would people come? Would anyone buy a book? Turns out, people did come! And they bought books! And I had an amazing time talking about my book and my writing journey. It was the first time I’ve ever felt comfortable speaking in front of people— and it made me hope for more speaking engagements in the future.
Zibby Owens took time out of her incredibly busy schedule to record a podcast with me on the 6th! I so enjoyed meeting her and loved that she had so many points to discuss about themes in my book, characters, and details I’d long forgotten! That episode will air next month in a special episode about motherhood: from infertility to empty nests. I will share links when I have them.
The week ended with my book launch party, which was such a beautiful event. Huge kudos to my friend, Rachel, who helped plan. Her attention to detail, from wildflowers akin to those in Ecuador perched in hiking boots, to a ten-foot rendition of my book as a backdrop, deserves a massive chef’s kiss.
All in all, it was an amazing week, but I know the fun doesn’t stop there!

One thing I know for sure— I am proud of myself that I didn’t let fear stand in my way of sitting down to type Gap Year long ago. And I am proud that I kept trying to find a path to publishing despite rejection, imposter syndrome, and the occasional “what-ifs” that crawled into my ear. Yes, that was a direct reference to Shel Silverstein’s poem.
Thank you for sharing this journey with me! As Jane says— (spoiler!)— it’s not the end, but only the beginning.
