I Made Claude Readable Again.

You’ve seen the complaints. Hell, you’ve probably made them. You ask Claude a question and get back a wall of text: dense, jargon-packed, zero paragraph breaks. The answer is in there somewhere. You read it twice and you’re still not sure where.

Don’t take my word for it:

That’s a Bloomberg host, an indie hacker with nearly a million followers, and two viral posts with over 650k views between them, (and of course Ben Dickson’s note which I had to add here just to annoy him) all saying the same thing in the last two weeks.

Here’s what happens: every time the models get smarter, they also get more... thorough. Great for the code. Rough for the human who has to read about it.

Claude Code already (sort of) ships with a real fix for this. It’s called an output style, and it swaps out the part of Claude’s instructions that controls tone and formatting. Not a polite request stacked on top of everything else... an actual replacement, built into the product.

So why does nobody use it?

Because the menu for it lives three levels deep in the terminal, and the Desktop app doesn’t show it at all and the standalone command for it got removed a few versions back. A feature nobody can find is a feature nobody uses.

Claude code is amazing, but it gets exhausting reading through it’s outputs, so I decided to make my own Claude Code plugin to help. I’m calling it the “LEJ-Output-Fixer.” It’s good enough to share, so I published it to GitHub for everyone else.

Paste this into Claude Code (Terminal or Desktop, doesn’t matter):

That’s the whole thing. Claude runs two commands, you pick a style from a menu, done.

Scannable: Answer first, short paragraphs, 8th-grade reading level, jargon spelled out. For when you’re smart but busy and Claude keeps handing you homework.

Bottom Line First: Executive brief mode. The verdict up top, then only the details that would change a decision. Numbers over adjectives.

Walk Me Through It: Claude does the work at full quality but narrates it: says what it’s about to do, defines every term, explains what happened in plain cause-and-effect. For when the territory is new to you.

All three keep Claude Code’s coding instructions fully intact. They change how Claude talks to you, never how well it codes.

And if none of the three fit? Run the picker, choose Create new preset, and Claude interviews you: how formal, how long-winded, what formatting you want, what habits drive you nuts. It writes your custom style and turns it on. Yours forever, survives every update.

Three things I made sure of before putting my name on this:

1. Nothing activates on install. The plugin never touches your settings until you pick a style yourself.

2. The footprint is one settings field. Picking a style writes one line. Turning styles off removes it. That’s it.

3. It works where people actually are. Terminal and Desktop app, same two commands. The whole reason this exists is that the built-in menu didn’t make it to Desktop.
