Give that little heart a playful tap if you love selfies!
Friends: It is almost time to start revvin’ our self-portrait engines.
#SELFIETEMBER2026 IS ONNNNN!!
What’s this all about? What are this year’s prompts? What do you have to do? What the heck am I even talking about?? Here’s (almost) everything you need to know about #Selfietember2026.
#Selfietember is my global 30-day self-portrait drawing challenge. We start September 1, 2026 and go until September 30, or until you feel like stopping (some #Selfietemberists keep selfie-ing right on into October and beyond!).
Before we officially begin, I’ll be dropping suggestions for art supplies, how to keep going in that third-week slump, why you should do this at all, and, finally, the Official #Selfietember Prompt List. Oh, and about that: We’re doing something a little different this year. ← tantalizing non-hint
You can also see the Official #Selfietember2026 Prompts on my Instagram, but you get all the other fun prep stuff here. And how much does all of this cost, ye aske?
Nothin’. #Selfietember is free and always will be. If you want to upgrade to a paid subscription to support my heroic efforts here at Like, TOTALLY!!, or buy me a coffee, that’s great, but #Selfietember is free and open to all. So make sure you’re subscribed!
Even though #Selfietember is 31 days away, we can still start preparing for it now with a few simple steps. First: get rid of all the excuses that would stop you from doing #Selfietember.
Drawing is great, drawing is fun, drawing is everything for some of us. And yet! We can still encounter obstacles to drawing. See if any of these sound familiar:
I don’t have time
I can’t draw faces, only bats
I don’t know what art supplies to use
I have too many art supplies and now I’m so confuuuuuuused what do I use AAARRRRGGGHHH
OMG I didn’t get the art supplies I wanted to use and it’s already September AAAARRRGGGGHHHH
I’m worried these self-portraits will turn out badly AAAAAARRRRRGGHHHH
Etc.
As your official #Selfietember cheerleader, I’m here to snip the red wire on all potential blowups in advance. I want #Selfietember to be fun AND as easy as possible.
I shall address each of the above typical drawing issues and share what makes #Selfietember fun, simple, and oh-so-doable:
Time: The point of #Selfietember is to get drawing; it’s not about creating a masterpiece (though your subject, You, is/are a total work of art). You can spend as much or as little time as you want on your daily self-portrait. Do 5 minutes on a busy day or half an hour when you have more time. It’s up to you.
You’re not sure how to draw faces: Well, this is a great way to learn!
You don’t know what art supplies to use/Have too many art supplies: Ah, supermarket syndrome—too many choices. There are three ways to deal with this. One: Pick your preference: analog art tools or digital. Don’t worry, you can mix it up, going back and forth between the two, or commit to one (and change your mind). Two, narrow down to your favorite media—watercolor, those alcohol markers you couldn’t wait to get and have used once, a box of 64 crayons. Three, go hardcore—one sketchbook, one pen, one watercolor set or bunch of markers, etc., and stick with those through the whole month.
You won’t get your chosen art supplies in time: Ohhhhh yes you will. I’m giving you some options in the next newsletter. Plenty of time to order a fresh sketchbook (like you don’t have 23 of them in your stash) and other supplies you “don’t have.” ← LOLLLLL
You’re worried the selfies will turn out badly: “Badly”? I don’t know what that means. A drawing you made is a good drawing. If you don’t like the way a selfie turns out, guess what—you get to make another one tomorrow. 30 bad selfies is better than none done. That’s my math, and I’m sticking to it.
You don’t have to share, though I personally would LUUUURRRRVE to see your selfies. I’ll start a #Selfietember2026 chat thread here in the coming weeks. You can also share on Instagram using the hashtag #selfietember2026 so I can find your selfie (you can also tag me there @suzanacolon). But you don’t have to share if you don’t want to; you can always keep your treasures to yourself.
A word about sharing in the Chat: I won’t be offering critique or tweak tips, nor will anyone else. #Selfietember isn’t about getting feedback other than “This is awesome and you are amazing!!” It’s a safe space for selfies.
You can read what I learned after 30 days of doing self-portraits if you want, but #Selfietember’s not really a learning experience; it’s a doing experience. It’s a challenge that’s not challenging (but people love the word “challenge,” so yeah), a delightful opportunity to draw with me, with friends, and with people all over the world. Most important, it’s a chance to draw because it’s FUN.
And that’s a monumental good thing.
(There’s a vague hint about this year’s theme/prompts in that video. No, we will not be doing #Selfietember: You’re Devo Every Day or #Selfietember: Food As Sexual Innuendo. Though those are both intriguing ideas.)
What other questions do you have, awesome sauce-omes? Are you IN for #Selfietember2026? Leave a comment!
#Selfietember is more fun with a friend—share this post and bring ‘em in!
All art and words by me. There’s no AI in this newsletter anywhere EVER and there NEVER WILL BE. #UnplugSkynet
