Your Brain Didn't Make You Smart

“Read in the Name of your Lord Who created,
Created man from a clinging substance.
Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous,
Who taught by the pen,
Taught man that which he knew not.”
(Qur’an 96:1–5)

We often celebrate intelligence.

We admire degrees, applaud achievements, and praise those who seem to possess extraordinary knowledge. Somewhere along the way, we begin to believe that our understanding is solely the result of our own effort

that if we study hard enough, work long enough, and think deeply enough, knowledge becomes ours by right.

but the Quran gently redirects this notion- a notion that humbles the heart.

the very first revelation sent to humanity was not simply a command to read. it was a reminder of Who makes reading meaningful. before Allah ﷻ speaks about books, writing, or learning, He introduces Himself as the One Who teaches.

ٱقْرَأْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ

“He taught man that which he knew not.”
(Surah Al-Alaq 96:5)

Pause for a moment.

every word you understand.
every language you speak.
every formula you solve.
every diagnosis a physician makes.
every invention that changes the world.
every insight that suddenly “clicks.”

it all began with Allah teaching humanity what it could never have discovered without His permission.

We enter this world knowing nothing. have you ever seen a newborn conversing, talking, interpreting? no, but as the baby grows into a toddler and ultimately into an adult, he begins to show signs of intelligence. this capacity to even “learn” is from Allah SWT, this highly advanced skill of storing things in brain can only be from someone Who Installed a highly advanced memory chip in the computer of the body i.e brain.

now imagine Someone who gifted us with knowledge, how superiorly Wise He would be. SubhanAllah.

Allah says:

🟡وَٱللَّهُ أَخْرَجَكُم مِّنۢ بُطُونِ أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ شَيْـًۭٔا وَجَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلسَّمْعَ وَٱلْأَبْصَـٰرَ وَٱلْأَفْـِٔدَةَ ۙ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ

“And Allah brought you out of your mothers’ wombs knowing nothing, and He gave you hearing, sight, and hearts so that you may give thanks.”
(Surah An-Nahl 16:78)

not a single letter, not a single language.
not even the ability to recognize the faces of those who held us.

the mind we rely upon...
the memory that stores information...
the curiosity that drives us to learn...
the teachers who guide us...
the books that preserve knowledge...
even the ability to understand what we read

Every one of these is a mercy from Allah.

when we truly reflect on this, arrogance has no place to remain.

how can we boast about knowledge when the very capacity to think was gifted to us?

Allah reminds us:

🟡وَفَوْقَ كُلِّ ذِى عِلْمٍ عَلِيمٌۭ

But above those ranking in knowledge is the One All-Knowing.

(Surah Yusuf 12:76)

no matter how many books we finish or titles we earn, there will always be knowledge beyond our reach. The One whose knowledge has no limits is Allah, Al-Aalim “The All-Knowing.”

even the greatest of creation recognized this reality.

when the angels questioned Allah’s wisdom in creating humanity, Allah taught Adam the names of all things. then He SWT asked the angels to inform Him of those names.

🟡وَعَلَّمَ ءَادَمَ ٱلْأَسْمَآءَ كُلَّهَا ثُمَّ عَرَضَهُمْ عَلَى ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ فَقَالَ أَنۢبِـُٔونِى بِأَسْمَآءِ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ

He taught Adam the names of all things, then He presented them to the angels and said, “Tell Me the names of these, if what you say is true?”

(surah Baqarah 2:31)

the angels replied:

🟡قَالُوا۟ سُبْحَـٰنَكَ لَا عِلْمَ لَنَآ إِلَّا مَا عَلَّمْتَنَآ ۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ

“Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, You are the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.”
(surah baqarah 2:32)

what beautiful humility.

not, “We know.”

but, “We know only what You have taught us.”

this is the mindset of those closest to Allah.

even the Prophets themselves were taught by Allah.

Allah instructed His beloved Messenger ﷺ:

🟡وَقُل رَّبِّ زِدْنِى عِلْمًۭا

“And say, ‘My Lord, increase me in knowledge.’”
(Surah Taha 20:114)

notice that Allah did not tell the Prophet ﷺ to ask for more wealth or status in this verse. He SWT taught him to continually ask for knowledge,

because true knowledge is a divine gift that must be sought from its Giver.

sometimes we spend hours studying, only to forget everything during an exam.

other times, a difficult concept suddenly becomes clear after making a sincere dua.

why?

because information may come through books, but understanding comes from Allah.

He SWT opens hearts, grants insight, and He places light within minds.

knowledge is not merely accumulated, it is bestowed.

this realization changes the way we learn.

studying is no longer just an academic pursuit; it becomes an act of worship.

reading becomes an opportunity to witness Allah’s generosity.

teaching becomes sharing a gift that never truly belonged to us in the first place.

and success becomes a reason for gratitude rather than pride.

so the next time you remember a verse you had forgotten...
understand a concept that once confused you...
explain something that benefits another person...
or achieve something through knowledge...

just pause before saying, “I figured it out.”

instead, say:

“Alhamdulillah. My Lord taught me what I never could have known on my own.”

for every page you understand, every lesson you retain, every truth you discover, and every moment of wisdom you experience is a reminder of the words with which Allah introduced His revelation to humanity:

🟡عَلَّمَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ

“He taught man that which he knew not.”
(surah al alaq 96:5)

May Allah make us among those who seek knowledge with sincerity, receive it with humility, act upon it with wisdom, and use it to draw nearer to Him.
