Today, I want to share some things we can do to begin hearing our intuition more clearly and intentionally.
I thought I would share three simple things, but as I made my list I kept thinking of other things I couldn’t leave off.
So, I give you six very simple practices that you can incorporate easily into your life that will help you hear the voice of your intuition, the voice that is already there and already speaking to you.
Don’t be deceived by their simplicity, that is where their power lies (humans like to overcomplicate things).
The world is busy and chaotic. It seems to be increasing in speed. You are constantly being bombarded by messages from marketers (which now feels like everyone you know) about what you need. Jobs are getting more complex and you’re expected to do the work of ten people. It can feel like you need to keep up with everything, but that’s an impossible task and if you try to do that you’ll lose yourself in the process.
Choosing simplicity in a complex and overwhelmed world is a rebellious choice, but one that will serve you well. You can simplify every area of your life, which at first thought can also feel overwhelming. The point is to start, somewhere, anywhere, and begin to let go of the excessive and unnecessary.
Simplify your surroundings by decluttering or downsizing.
I have some special skills in this department, having downsized by 90% in 2016 before my family moved into an RV for almost five years. I can assure you, this is something I didn’t think was possible, but I did it… and it felt amazing. At first it was hard, but once we began to feel the lightness of being left behind as we let go of unnecessary and excessive things we loved it.
When you simplify your surroundings, your things, you have less trying to pull at your attention, less visual stimulation coming in.
Your home should be a sanctuary from the world, not a constant reminder of all you have to do, or all you haven’t done yet.
It doesn’t mean you need to get rid of everything, or remove your personality from your space. You’re just removing what is not really needed.
You’re creating some breathing room and clear space around you. You’re decreasing the noise, which in turn, allows you to hear the whispers of intuition.
The things that are excessive are often keeping open loops that pull your attention more than you realize, which brings us to the second thing on our list.
There are probably some things you need to do, but just haven’t done yet, like a lightbulb that needs to be changed, or something that needs to be put away.
Right now those tug at your awareness constantly (even if you don’t realize it) and you feel like you have to stay vigilant to remember all of them.
I bet if you look around you right now, you’ll see many things that need to be taken care of.
Take some time to make a list of everything you can think of that you need to do, and then actually go through that list finishing things, especially the things that just need to be done once.
There will probably also be ongoing tasks on that list, things that will have to be done over and over again. Create habits and systems for getting those things done regularly.
There might be open loops in your life that you have no intention of actually finishing. You can close those by letting the thing go.
These might be projects you began but won’t ever finish. It’s ok to let them go. You might have gotten what you needed from the project already, even if it’s just the realization that this isn’t a project you actually want to do or have time for in this season of your life.
Sometimes we plan for our perfect dream life, when we’ll have the time and energy to do everything we would like to do, but in this noisy world that is constantly offering you new ideas of things to do - you just won’t be able to do them all.
You can do anything, but you can’t do everything.
By letting go of the things you aren’t going to finish, you allow that loop to close. It will show you which things are truly meaningful to you and give you time to finish those things. You can begin to close out loops way faster than you think you can when you simplify and let go of excessive commitments.
It’s easy to take your health for granted when it’s good, but when it goes you realize it’s the most important thing. Your body is constantly communicating with you.
If you’re in good health, it will be a clear channel through which you can receive the hunches of your intuition.
If you’re in poor health, it will be sending you messages of things it needs.
The body speaks the language of sensation. By tuning in, supporting it, and addressing its needs, it will not have to demand your attention, but rather you free it to offer you more subtle guidance.
We weren’t meant to live in a world that moves so fast as it does today. This is part of why our nervous systems feel so frazzled all the time. We, who are a part of nature, have over time, disconnected ourselves from it.
We live in climate-controlled boxes with artificial light. We get our food from a central location, disconnected from where the food itself originated, independent of the season it was grown - if it was in fact grown at all, as much of the “food” people eat is actually “food-type products.” We wear plastic clothes that disrupt our bodies energy system and endocrine system. We interact with other people without occupying the same physical space as them (without truly being in their energy). We spend much of our time in our heads and not paying attention to our bodies at all.
We were designed to live slower.
To DO less.
To BE more.
The interesting thing is that when you begin to slow down and pay attention to things more, it seems as though time slows down a bit more too.
Paying attention often means getting out of your head and occupying your entire body. Using all of your senses.
It helps you to notice the small things, and even enjoy the details more.
And slowing down and paying attention certainly helps you perceive the nudges of your intuition.
Writing is a creative practice that slows us down as we translate our thoughts into words, especially if you write longhand (and even more especially if you write in cursive).
Sometimes you begin a sentence and by the time you get to the end of it, it has gone somewhere completely different than where you expected it to. That’s part of its beauty.
Writing helps get things out of your head as you move them onto paper. It helps them to become more clear.
Writing can connect us to the divine in unexpected ways as ideas flow through us and onto paper that we might not even know where they came from.
You don’t have to be a poet or a novelist to write.
You might simply keep a private journal.
Try writing down a question you would like an answer to in the journal and then allow yourself to free write.
See what comes out.
You might be surprised at how the answer to your question was within you the whole time, you just needed to give it a way to get out.
We can’t talk about tapping into intuition without including prayer and meditation.
Through prayer we speak to the divine and through meditation we create a quiet space to hear it speak back.
Notice the prayers you give. Are you begging for something you don’t have, in a way that you feel very intently the absence of it? Or are you expressing gratitude for all that you have in your life including the resolution of things that are not currently resolved.
These have very different energies and create very different emotional states within. Swing the majority to gratitude and you will notice a significant shift in your quality of life.
Meditation is all about creating space, letting go of the worries of life, maybe putting your attention on something specific and holding it quietly, even if just for a moment.
You might meditate by trying to release all thoughts and just sit in silence relaxing the body, or by holding one idea and allowing thoughts to move through your mind without trying to control them or “figure something out.”
Meditation gives you a way to slow down and quiet the mind so that the intuition can come through more clearly.
These things all seem simple, and they are. We like to complicate things, to treat intuition as some mystical thing that only a few people have access to. But, in truth, intuition is something very human that we all have, we just aren’t all listening and paying attention.
It comes through in different ways for everyone and you have to learn how it shows itself to you.
This list wasn’t really a step by step of how to hear your intuition, but rather a way to live that is more conducive to noticing that which is already there.
The less things you have fighting for your attention, the easier it is to notice that small voice when it speaks. It is speaking to everyone, you just have to learn its language and practice following it.
What have you done to help you tap into your intuition?
Join the Summer Book Experience
Beginning mid-July, we’ll be reading The Game of Life and How to Play It together inside the Living the Game of Life community.
This isn’t just a book club.
It’s a guided experience designed to help you take Florence Scovel Shinn’s timeless principles off the page and into your everyday life.
Through reflection prompts, community discussion, live calls, and deeper chapter companion teachings, we’ll explore what it looks like to release old patterns, trust yourself more deeply, and begin creating change from the inside out.
If you’ve ever read Florence’s work and thought, “I understand it, but I’m not sure how to actually live it,” this experience is for you.
Details and dates will be announced soon.
Join the community at a special founder’s rate of $99/year to access all the calls (plus a special program coming in the fall).
If you still need to pick up a copy of the book, you can find it on Amazon.
Did you know I have a community?
For women who are tired of overthinking, second-guessing themselves, and carrying emotional patterns they can’t seem to outgrow.
Most of us don’t need more information. We need a safe place to release what’s getting in the way of what we already know.
Inside Living the Game of Life, we combine Florence Scovel Shinn’s teachings with emotional clearing, practical tools, and supportive community to help you trust yourself, move forward with clarity, and create a life that feels genuinely yours.
You define what success looks like. We clear what’s in the way.
You’ve read the books. Taken the courses. Done the inner work.
But if you still find yourself second-guessing your decisions, repeating the same patterns, or struggling to trust yourself, there may be a deeper pattern at play.
My 1:1 work helps women identify and clear the hidden emotional patterns that keep them stuck so they can move forward with greater clarity, confidence, and self-trust.
The goal isn’t to become someone new.
It’s to trust the woman you already are.
