The entrance…

Provincetown is built for cruising. The tiny Cape Cod town is ideal for a street cruise, with many sweaty dance floors and a homo nude beach. It’s also expensive, which means that Gays pack into houses, sharing rooms and beds, making cruising spots the only option for many (our cruising renaissance is also an economic phenomenon). But the pièce de résistance, and one of my favorite cruising spots on earth, is the infamous Dick Dock.

The Dick Dock offers a wonderful hybrid of street, beach and darkroom cruising. Now, before you think that I’m blowing up the spot, the Dick Dock is ingrained in Provincetown history and culture, known all over town. So well, in fact, it even has its own merch.

Before the construction of the Dick Dock in the 70s

This iteration of the Dick Dock (there was another here in town prior) was created in 1978, beneath a bar-hotel which hosts legendary tea dances. In February of 1978, a Nor’easter storm wrecked its deck and the beach underneath. The original deck rested flat on the beach, and patrons could swim in the pool or dance, then run into the ocean. After the destruction, the deck had to be raised up on a series of pilings, struts, and beams, creating the space under the actual deck with lots of privacy, and thus the Dick Dock was born.

I’ve had many fuzzy and hairy memories at the Dick Dock, but one of my favorites happened this summer. After a chaotic, sweaty night under a disco ball, I brought a guy to make out like teenagers under the school bleachers.

According to our trusty tide app, high tide was due to flood the Dick Dock at 2:46 a.m. At 2:15, as we kissed while the water crept up, we watched a hundred guys rush their orgasms, negotiating how wet and muddy their shoes and knees could get. Poppers and cum mixed with the fishy, biomarine odor of the ocean, while tiny waves gradually pushed us against the pier wall, pinning us between our needs and the ocean.
