Finding my voice P. 1

When I first decided to become a children’s books illustrator, I thought it was pretty straightforward. Create a body of work, research publishing houses and introduce myself.

I did it. I illustrated several books and I enjoyed it.

However something kept nagging at me.

I did love it. I enjoyed it. And I loved seeing my work out there for the children and parents to enjoy, but something was missing.

Something felt lacking.

At least for me it did. I don’t know about the art directors or the authors I worked with. They all seemed very happy with my work. I was too. But something wasn’t there and I couldn’t put my finger on it.

So after ten years illustrating picture books and chapter books, I’ve decided to take a year off. No client commissions . No marketing my work. I must try and figure out why I’m feeling this way.

I AM a children’s books illustrator.

I’ve been wanting to be a children’s books illustrator for a very long time, but now that I am one, I’m still not satisfied.

Surely there’s more to it than just knowing how to draw, compose and adapt for the younger audience?
