Pretty exciting this, my very first ever special guest to An Architect in Remission! Chris is a brilliant, inventive photographer whose work I first stumbled into with his series Intolerable Beauty. Since those slap-in-the-face wake-up-notice photos, he has continued to unearth majestic, breathtaking images from across the planet.
Of the photo above from his series Ecstatic Desolation, he writes:
I wish you could see the full resolution, it was shot as a multi-row panorama with a 350 mm telephoto, you can see every individual bird, all hunkered down in the raging wind. They are pretty incredible, they live on that structure, make their nests out of their own poop, and hatch their young in the most brutal conditions, 100kph winds whipping off the sea. They never come to land, they have predators on the land and so they only live on offshore rocks, structures, etc. There are four of these piers here, the only such structures for several hundred kilometers in both directions up and down the Strait of Magellan. This represents the entire local population of this species of cormorant. Biologist who study them call them the in between birds, because they are one of the only species in the world that can both fly in the air and underwater. Penguins fly underwater, but not in the air, and all the other kinds of birds fly in the air but not underwater. Cormorants are in between, they can do both. Underwater they fly really fast and catch fish. In the air they struggle to stay aloft, not graceful gliders like the albatross, more like ducks [where] their wings are flapping super fast and they look like they're going to crash any moment lol.

My architectural commissions take me to fun places. This one is a doubling (I’m pretty sure that’s right…) of an already giant facility — big enough to host hundreds of teams in tournament play (not as sure of that number).

I’ll be participating in the exhibition Midwestern Vernaculars: Pattern, Place, and Memory at the Convention Center downtown KC with photos from my Grain series. The exhibit is organized by the KCAC Curation Services and should be viewable before the month is out (I think).

Today would have been the 95th birthday of a man whose name was almost entirely made up from scratch. Leck Yan Dougherty is missed, but not forgotten.
