Welcome back to Lead with Intention! Today we’re diving into… your brain.
No, I haven’t gone all “Shutter Island” on you (IYKYK), so don’t worry. My scalpel is safely tucked away…
We’re going to be exploring a growth mindset. What it is, why you need one and how to start cultivating one.
But first! How are you getting on with some of those leadership rules worth breaking from my guest poster this week Lee Griffith? I’d love to know which ones resonated for you, so do leave a comment and let us know!
So what is a growth mindset?
Put simply, it’s this belief:
“It’s not difficult because I’m not capable. It’s because this is NEW.”
And...
“I can’t do this...YET.” (But I will learn and know how to do it in the future.)
It’s the belief that your abilities, skills and expertise aren’t fixed or frozen in time, but that you are capable of learning and developing and mastering them over time, evolving and growing constantly.
Why am i talking about this today? It’s because having a growth mindset is one of the things that employers are looking for as they hire senior Communications leaders, according to the latest market report from recruiter Ellwood Atfield.
And even if you don’t work in Communications (and I know many of you don’t), I’d still bet that this is on the list for any organisation or company looking for their next leaders.
Growth mindset stems from work done by pyschologist Carol Dweck (here’s her TED talk on it) and I use it often in my coaching and in workshops and public speaking.
Why is having a growth mindset so important in your career?
Here’s why.
