Not as Intended #1

Welcome to a new series where I’ll be sharing vintage pieces that might not be used as originally intended, but work just as well (if not better) in new ways around the home.

The first piece we’ll be looking at today is the good old Vintage Ashtray.

I find these quite a lot on my sourcing trips to France and Belgium. Just when I think I’ve seen them all, I’ll come across something completely different - like one I found at Amiens this weekend that was a denture mould finished with a gold tooth haha.

They’re one of the easiest pieces to bring into your home without overthinking it. I’m always drawn to the ceramic ones with interesting shapes, and anything with a bit of colour.

Originally made as ashtrays (obviously), and often used as advertising for brands like liqueurs, small businesses, and even motor garages. I always overhear at markets, “Oh I love this - such a shame I don’t smoke anymore.” Luckily, these now have plenty of other uses - even for non-smokers.

I personally use them all over the house - on my bedside table for jewellery, by the front door for keys, in the bathroom as a soap dish, or just as decor on a shelf because they’re made so beautifully. I’ve seen them used as butter dishes, and I even have a friend who keeps her Scrub Daddy in an ashtray by the sink (iconic). They’re one of those pieces that just work wherever you put them.

What I love most is the design - they’re usually really well made, whether in glass or ceramic. The glass adds a bit of texture, and if you go for coloured ceramics, they can bring in a really nice warmth without it feeling too styled.
