As the evenings draw in and we naturally retreat indoors, our sitting rooms become the heart of the home. They are the places where we curl up with a book, share stories with friends, or simply enjoy a quiet moment as the day comes to a close.

Creating a space that feels calm, welcoming, and truly your own is one of the most rewarding design projects you can undertake.

When I think about a cosy sitting room, it isn’t just about what it looks like — it’s about how it feels. I want the space to exhale a sense of calm the moment I walk in. Soft, layered lighting is always my starting point: warm-toned lamps dotted around the room, candles flickering gently on the mantlepiece, a small fire glowing in the grate if you’re lucky enough to have one. Avoid relying on overhead lighting; instead, let the room glow softly from different sources.

Below are some of the lamps and light fittings that I have chosen for our sitting room, as well as a few of my current faves (I’m always on the hunt for fabulous lamps, as I love my lighting to make a statement - our palm tree lamp is always such a talking point and I have found a similar one here and below.

Colour has such a profound effect on mood. For a calm sitting room, I lean towards gentle, earthy tones — warm creams, soft greens — colours that connect you back to nature. They create a sense of serenity and timelessness. If you prefer bolder shades, consider using them in small touches — a velvet cushion in deep teal, or a patterned rug that adds richness without overwhelming the space.

Cosiness comes alive through touch. Think about the fabrics and finishes that will invite you to stay a little longer. A linen sofa dressed with woollen throws, cushions in velvet and brushed cotton, a thick rug underfoot — these details instantly make a room feel more intimate and layered. Natural textures such as wood, stone, and wicker add warmth and authenticity too.

  1. Adam & Eve Cushion, 2. Must Eyes Embroidered Cushion, 3. Faux Fur Throw, 4. Pure Wool Throw, 5. Butterfly Embroidered Cushion, 6. Cashmere Eyes Throw.

Ask yourself: how do you want to use the space? A quiet corner with a comfortable armchair and good reading light can transform evenings. A low table in easy reach of your favourite seat makes room for a book stack, a scented candle, or a cup of cacao. I love creating little rituals in these spaces — a Sunday afternoon with the fire lit and the family gathered, or a moment just for me, wrapped in a blanket, notebook in hand.

No cosy sitting room is complete without fragrance. A favourite candle, a diffuser, or even a small vase of fresh herbs from the garden can create a gentle sensory backdrop. Scent has the power to soothe, to ground, and to make a space feel unmistakably yours.

  1. Bamboo Trellis Fabric, 2. Sophie Paterson x Addison Ross Coasters, 3. Matching Tray, 4. GROVE England Anemone Candle, 5. Byredo Candle, 6. Picture Frame

A calm and cosy sitting room doesn’t require endless new purchases or dramatic makeovers. Often it’s the small, thoughtful touches that matter most: a lamp moved to a different corner, a throw brought in from another room, a small stack of your favourite books placed within easy reach. Above all, it’s about creating a space that feels like an embrace — a retreat from the outside world, where you can breathe deeply and simply be.

Wishing you a wonderfully cosy Sunday!
