If you're new to journaling and not sure where to begin, you're in the right place.
Journaling is often recommended for its ability to cultivate self-awareness, self-connection and personal growth.
I’ve been journaling regularly for the past decade — and more intensely and consistently over the last four years, with a focus on opening up creative energy and expression.
I’m now excited to share some of what I’ve learned along the way.
Today we cover:
Exploring Journaling Methods (For Being & Deing)
Getting started with Journaling
The Art of Asking Questions
To help you get started, let's explore two effective journaling methods:
Balancing action and contemplation is essential in journaling. Two of my favourite methods serve distinct purposes but complement each other well:
Morning Pages involve writing three handwritten pages first thing in the morning, with no rules or direction. This practice encourages a free flow of thoughts, allowing you space to explore whatever comes up.
It's an incredible way to stimulate creativity and gain new insights.
It’s been my place to take a step back, and it’s how I opened up to flood gates to my creative force.
To create distance from thoughts, emotions, and experiences.
A space to breathe, pause, and see things “as they really are” — without noise, distortion, or judgement.
There’s no right or wrong. Every day looks different.
You’re simply being with yourself, as you are.
All is accepted. That in itself is freeing, like a form of free-flow meditation.
Reflective check-ins are more structured.
They involve pausing to review your day or week, assess what you’ve learned, and set intentions for what’s ahead.
This method is a gentle way to bring awareness to your actions and patterns.
By integrating what you’ve observed into your next steps, it supports intentional living — helping you align your daily choices with your longer-term goals.
Before diving into journaling, it helps to pause and reflect:
What’s drawing you to journaling?
What do you hope to gain from it?
Maybe there’s something specific you're navigating, or maybe you're simply curious after hearing friends talk about its benefits.
Either way, take a moment to consider where you are in life — and how journaling might serve you right now.
Start small. Experiment.
Let your practice evolve as you go.
Check in with yourself regularly and adjust as needed.
This process of exploring and adapting is part of what makes journaling so personal and powerful.
Questions are powerful tools for self-discovery and understanding.
To cultivate curiosity and everyday awareness through journaling and beyond, consider these approaches:
Daily Contemplation
Extend your inquiry beyond the written page and let your questions live with you throughout the day.
Observe your thoughts, emotions, and bodily responses as you move through daily life, and see what insights come up for you.
Ask for What You Need
Tune into your own needs and those of others by asking what is truly required in the moment.
This practice can be supported by your journaling practice, create clarity and support your overall well-being.
Somatic Inquiry
Bring awareness to your body as you journal.
Explore physical sensations and emotional cues. Techniques like the Kiloby Inquiries (KI) can help you gently explore deeper layers, such as shadow and repression.
Transform Assumptions into Inquiries
Notice where you’re operating on autopilot or making assumptions, and turn them into questions and hypotheses.
This opens space for deeper understanding and new possibilities, especially useful in personal growth, relationships, or startup world.
Journaling offers a flexible and supportive way to reconnect with yourself and life.
Whether you’re exploring creativity, seeking clarity, or integrating experiences, journaling can support your journey of self-discovery and growth.
🌱 Keep connecting, reflecting, and creating as you embark on this enriching practice.Once you feel more grounded in your journaling practice, you might feel called to share some of your reflections with others.
Publishing your insights — even a small piece — can be a powerful next step.
Stay tuned for more on this soon.
