The video continues the tour of Max’s laboratory and its equipment. The lab has several HPLC systems, including an older unit that is still working, another kept for spare parts, and a newer Shimadzu system purchased last year. A further new unit arrived in March. It also has a MALDI-TOF/TOF instrument, described as similar to tandem mass spectrometry and intended for larger proteins and biochemical analysis.
Most samples currently come from Poland, followed by Germany, with smaller numbers arriving from elsewhere in Europe and the UK. Max knows of one official Polish peptide producer supplying researchers but believes most other businesses are likely resellers or operating underground.
The lab has also purchased an ICP system with an autosampler for heavy-metal testing, although it is not yet operational because the electrical installation is still being completed. Max receives many requests for heavy-metal analysis but has not found contamination in lyophilised samples. A raw material used by a supplement company previously tested positive for a heavy metal, possibly mercury, but this was analysed at a university around two years ago.
Epitalon samples generally test at around 98% purity. These are analysed by HPLC using methods involving methanol or formic acid, with the method adjusted where necessary. Endotoxins are tested using Pierce chromogenic kits and a microplate reader. The laboratory also has its own water-purification system, producing purified water for HPLC work and sample reconstitution.
