In art school, Monica Miller blueprinted her studio space and divided it by future time.
Then she predicted what would happen at each coordinate — not what she planned to make, but what was going to happen. She made guesses. She twisted the narrative. Monica held space, as they put it, for the potential of somebody expecting or even just imagining a particular event at a particular location at a particular hour.
One of the predictions: at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, you are going to experience a clown in this space.
They were, she said, kind of trolling their studio mates. But also — and this is what I haven’t been able to stop thinking about — it was a real project. Monica was relating time and space simultaneously, asking what it means to facilitate a situation rather than author one, placing a narrator in the room whose voice they couldn’t quite identify (is it masculine? feminine? neutral? what quality do you assign it and why?) and then watching what the room did with that.
Aquarius Rising · Capricorn stellium · Saturn in Capricorn, last degree
Monica said I am so sensitive to time in the first five minutes, before we’d touched the chart at all.
She is an Aquarius Rising, which means Saturn is her chart ruler — the planet that sets the tone and pace for everything. And Monica has a Capricorn stellium with Saturn at its last degree, which means they were among the final people born with Saturn in his home sign before he moved on. Aquarius and Capricorn are both Saturn’s signs, one the eccentric systems-thinker, one the institutional builder, and Monica carries both — the long view and the structure, the experiment and the archive.
What I find most interesting about Saturn-ruled people is not that they are disciplined, though sometimes they are. It is that they have an unusual relationship to the distance between now and later. Saturn is the furthest visible planet from the sun, back far enough to watch everything unfold in front of him. And when you understand that as a Saturn-ruled person — when you stop experiencing that distance as delay and start experiencing it as vantage — you can begin to work with time rather than against it.
Monica described herself, without prompting, as a durational worker. She said: I can’t just go into a place and right off the bat make a call. They have to know how the building moves, who comes in and out, what the site requires. The full context first. Then the call.

When Monica described the years inside her directorship — seven galleries, four of them offsite, one of them at an airport — what she was also describing was the particular exhaustion of having a large practice inside a small container. The institution traveling with you into every room you enter. The work you do that no one around you has a frame for because it exceeds the job description. The mentor who says, when you leave, that you made the role too complicated — meaning: you made it fit your ambition, and the institution noticed.
What I also recognized was the moment when the math tips. When staying has its own cost that finally outweighs the cost of not knowing what comes next.
I wrote four manuscripts during my Saturn through the third house transit. I say this not as credential but because it is directly relevant: Saturn just moved into Aries, which for Monica as an Aquarius Rising is the third house — language, cognition, research, the way you make sense of the world before the world gets to respond. She is getting research ideas that don’t look like anything she has done before. Sculptural ideas. She keeps thinking: who the fuck am I?
The third house is where you find out.

Here is the practice in concrete terms.
Monica maps her work in Adobe Illustrator — not in a notebook, not in a project management tool, but in a design application, visually, because that is how their mind moves. She also uses Kumu (kumu.io), an open-source relational mapping tool, for research that requires showing how things connect across distance. When holding multiple threads simultaneously, she makes them visual rather than sequential, because sequential implies an order she hasn’t decided yet.
The current Illustrator document: on one axis, internal projects versus external ones. The sculptural ideas she keeps getting are internal, for now, because she is the only person activating them. Blind Date — her project that paired artists on platonic blind dates during the pandemic, over 100 participants — is being revived in Los Angeles with an art space already committed, which makes it external, the authorship diluted toward the collective, which is intentional. A major public collaboration with her mentor sits even further out, the authorship line going thin in a way she described as a great thing. And below all of it, the research: artist residencies, artist economies, feminist art practices and the mentorship that moves through them, all compounding.
She said: I want four of me.

12th house year · Uranus into Gemini, fifth house · Jupiter into seventh house
Monica is in her 12th house year, which ends at her January birthday.
The 12th house is where desire stops working the way it usually does — not because something is wrong, but because the tools that work in every other year of your life are simply not the tools this year responds to. Desire requires a conscious subject. The 12th house year temporarily dissolves that subject, which is either terrifying or useful depending on how tightly you were gripping.
She said she was frustrated that the multiplicity was bubbling but time was just sitting on it. I said: the multiplicity is the year’s work. It is accumulating whether you can see it or not.
For an Aquarius Rising, this is a particular kind of uncomfortable, because Aquarius builds systems and watches from the hill and generally has a clear idea of how things should be arranged. The 12th house year says: not yet. Not the arrangement. The experience first, the arrangement later.
(I want to be careful here not to make this sound easier than it is. Ten months of not being able to use your primary tools is not a spiritual opportunity that arrives gift-wrapped. It is, in Monica’s own words, a horrible feeling of not knowing. I’m noting this because the astrological frame can make things sound more graceful than they feel from the inside.)
At the end of April, Uranus moves into Gemini — Monica’s fifth house, the house of creative expression and joy and the things that cannot be commodified but make life worth living. Six years of electricity in the house of making things for the pleasure of it. In late June, Jupiter enters her seventh house, the house of dialogue and mirror and whoever is holding the other end of the conversation.
