When work has been exhausting for months, it is easy to start counting down to your next holiday as though those ten days away will somehow put everything back in place. You tell yourself that you only need to get through this project or these last few weeks, and then you will finally sleep properly, stop thinking about work and come back feeling like yourself again.

Sometimes that does happen, at least for a while. Holidays are not useless. A 2025 meta-analysis covering 32 studies and 256 effect sizes found that vacations can have a large positive effect on employee well-being, and the benefits may last longer than older research had suggested. But that is very different from saying that a holiday fixes burnout.

In one study of 76 employees, burnout dropped during a vacation but had already started returning within three days of going back to work and was back at pre-vacation levels within three weeks.

The World Health Organization (WHO) describes burnout as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. That word chronic matters. If the thing exhausting you has been building for six months, two weeks away does not change the conditions you are returning to.
