How to Write Faster Without Sacrificing Quality

Kevin Szabo · The Writing Chronicles

People think writing faster means worse writing because they are cutting corners.

There is some truth to that bro.

Even I used to skip thinking, and end up with weak work they have to fix later because I use to focus on two things at once:

The writing structure and the messaging.

That approach actually slows them down because they spend more time editing than they saved so there’s no real point to it.

The real technical reason most writing is slow is that people try to invent the structure and the content in the same pass.

What I mean is they try to sound smart and focus too heavily on the writing structure but only one of those should be the main focus one at a time.

I figured I’d try some attempts to figure out the order of ideas while also searching for the right words… yeah that failed AND it costed me way too much time.

That dual demand creates constant stopping, long pauses, and slow progress and makes you more prone to more procrastination.

Structure decisions and content decisions require different mental models and that takes a lot of time to balance.

Doing both at once is what makes the work sometimes 5 times longer. Seriously dude.

The fix is a simple system that forces the structure decisions first so the writing phase can stay clean and fast.

Here is the core of the writing system:

•  Decide the exact outcome of the piece before you write a single sentence (leads, sales, conversions, etc).

•  Separate the writing phase from the editing phase completely (don’t focus on the format, write bad format but get your point across).

•  Use a short pre-writing ritual that gets you into focus in under two minutes (short burst of value).

•  Work in timed blocks so you never sit in front of a blank page wondering what to do next (set a timer | Optional).

People who follow this process consistently finish drafts in less time while the quality stays the same or in most cases even improves their writing.

The structural decisions are already finished before the first sentence is written.

You now understand the actual technique that slows most writing and the basic structure that removes it.

Below is the complete, ready-to-use version of the system. This is the part that turns the idea into daily practice.
