Live Podcast: Loving Your Senior Dog Well with Dr. Monica Tarantino
This one has been on the books for a long time, and I am so excited to finally share it: Dr. Monica Tarantino is joining us on the podcast!
If her name isn’t familiar, you may recognize her Instagram handle: @seniordogdoc. She’s the co-founder of @petlosscommunity, whose content I’ve reposted so often because of how much comfort it’s brought people, both in anticipatory grief and after they’ve said goodbye. Dr. Tarantino is also a small animal veterinarian in the Charlotte, NC area and the founder of Senior Dog Revolution.
We’re going to talk through the essential components of loving a senior dog well, though as always, we’re open to wherever the conversation takes us. And if she’s ready, Aly is going to share a little about the weeks leading up to her difficult decision to say goodbye to her boy, Wyatt.
It promises to be both a deeply educational and profoundly emotional conversation. I can’t wait for it and look forward to so many of you joining us live.
One thing: I anticipate being inundated with questions in the chat during our conversation. We always start with the questions submitted in advance, so please, post yours in the comments here or email directly to me.

P.S. We have more therapy dog episodes coming - in case you’ve missed the first two, you can find them here and here (I finally know how to post previous episodes to my podcast tab on Substack, so moving forward, they will all be there!)
P.P.S. Two more weeks until I can share some really exciting news about Puppy Brain! I’ll share it here first, so stay tuned. (Any guesses?)
SOMETHING TO READ
“How I Go to the Woods” by Mary Oliver
I took Fritz on a long walk through the woods this weekend and, surrounded by the towering trees of the Sierra Nevada, couldn't help but think of Mary Oliver's "How I Go to the Woods." If you saw my post on Instagram, you saw the lupine in bloom, Fritz following his nose, and me following Fritz. It was magical and evidence that yes, indeed, I love him very much.

How to Build a Career You Love
As the mom of two young men — one who just graduated from NYU and one with a year left at UCSD — I spend a lot of time these days talking with them about the choices ahead. We exchange a lot of articles and videos, including this one from Bill Gurley that Max sent to me.
Gurley spent six years researching what separates great careers from good ones. Turns out it has a lot to do with obsessive curiosity. This excerpt on “following your fascination” (not your passion) is one of my favorite reframes I’ve come across this year, and helps me understand why I made the pivot from practicing law to raising therapy dogs.
As a fun aside, I love that this talk doubles as a bit of New York restaurant history. The “Danny” in Gurley’s opening story is Danny Meyer, who opted out of law school and went on to open Union Square Cafe and eventually founded Shake Shack.
