I spent most of yesterday preparing for a presentation I’m giving at the upcoming Doodle Summit, an event filled with an impressive roster of speakers, including Dr. Sylvalyn Hammond (you might know her as @thehonestvet), Jean Donaldson (author of the iconic book Mine), and Zazie Todd (Psychology Today columnist). I’m so honored to be included in this group of speakers.
My presentation is short enough that I’ll need to be exacting in my messaging, yet my name will be new to many in attendance. As the author of a book called Puppy Brain, people with older dogs might automatically think that my topic doesn’t apply to them.
It does, and here’s how.
If I could boil Puppy Brain down into two words, it would be this: instill resilience. The entire book is an odyssey through the development of a puppy’s brain and how we can work with that development in order to help them grow into resilient dogs. There are chapters on navigating spay and neuter decisions, on raising a therapy dog, and on making the difficult choice to say goodbye, but the book as a whole is steeped in the pursuit of resilience.
Which begs the question: what is resilience?
