Earlier this year, a company called to let us know they had decided not to move forward with our engagement. Instead, they were going to hire an internal AI manager.
I remember thinking, That makes perfect sense.
If you’re serious about AI, having someone internally who understands the technology, evaluates platforms, thinks through governance, and helps shape your technical strategy is a smart investment. Every organization should have someone focused on that work (internally or a partner).
Then, three months later, they called back. “We’re ready now.” They wanted our help to lead the human aspect of AI.
Not because the AI manager wasn’t doing a good job. Quite the opposite.
They were doing exactly what they had been hired to do. They were researching tools, meeting with vendors, building technical roadmaps, evaluating security, exploring integrations, and helping leadership understand what AI could make possible.
The technology was moving forward. The people weren’t.
This conversation reinforced something we’ve seen over and over again. Technology adoption and human adoption are two completely different jobs.
You can have the best AI strategy in the world, but if your employees don’t know how to apply it to their work, very little changes. People don’t become AI capable because they were given a license. They become capable because someone helped them build confidence, answered the questions they were hesitant to ask, and showed them what AI could do for the work sitting on their desk today.
This is where many organizations unintentionally create a gap.
Most AI leaders are hired because of their technical expertise. Their calendars quickly fill with vendor evaluations, governance discussions, security reviews, architecture decisions, executive meetings, and implementation planning. Those responsibilities are essential, but they leave very little room to coach and train hundreds or even thousands of employees through an entirely new way of working.
And honestly, they shouldn’t have to. That’s why the best AI leaders we’ve worked with don’t try to carry the transformation alone.
They build AI champion programs or find a partner to own the program that creates advocates across the business. They partner with HR, learning and development, communications, operations, and department leaders. They redesign workflows, create safe spaces for experimentation, celebrate small wins, and establish feedback loops that improve both the technology and the way people use it.
Instead of trying to personally drive adoption, they build a system that allows adoption to spread. Organizations will continue hiring exceptional AI leaders, and they should. Those leaders will shape technology strategy, governance, and innovation.
But they’ll also need internal people or partners who can focus on workforce readiness, capability building, workflow transformation, and organizational change. Because the challenge isn’t simply implementing AI.
It’s helping people build the confidence and skills to work differently. The organizations that create the strongest culture of learning will succeed.
The first chapter of AI was about productivity. The next chapter is about capability.
And capability doesn’t come from hiring one brilliant AI leader. It comes from building an organization where everyone learns how to work alongside AI.
Where is the biggest gap in your AI strategy today: the technology or the adoption?
