One Day, We Won’t Go to AI Conferences

A few months ago I said that someday we won’t go to AI conferences, just like we don’t go to email conferences or internet conferences.

That usually gets a reaction. I said what I said.

Right now, AI is still its own category. We attend AI conferences, build AI strategies, form AI committees, hire AI consultants, and spend a lot of time asking which tool everyone is using. That makes sense because we are still trying to understand what this technology can do, where it belongs, and how to use it responsibly.

But I don’t think this phase lasts forever.

Eventually, we won’t “go to AI.” It will simply be part of nearly everything we do.

Think about the internet. You don’t begin your workday by announcing that you are going to use it. You don’t celebrate every email you send or build a separate internet plan before opening a browser. These technologies became part of the infrastructure of work. They are so woven into our lives that we barely notice them anymore.

AI will get there too.

Right now, most of the AI conversation is centered on productivity and capacity. How can it help us write something faster? Summarize a meeting? Research a topic? Give an overwhelmed team a few hours back each week?

Those are good questions. Productivity is often the easiest place to begin because the value is visible. Something that took an hour now takes 15 minutes. A first draft appears in seconds. A meeting ends with a summary and action items instead of someone spending the next afternoon putting it all together.

That matters. But it is only the beginning.

The more interesting question is not, “How can we do the same work faster?” It is, “What are we now capable of doing that we could not do before?”

That question changes the entire conversation.

A small nonprofit may now be able to analyze years of donor feedback without hiring a research firm. A sales team may be able to prepare a personalized briefing before every prospect meeting instead of saving that level of preparation for only its largest opportunities. A business owner may be able to explore ten possible scenarios before making a decision rather than settling for the two ideas they had time to develop.

A team buried in information may finally be able to see the patterns hiding inside it.

That isn’t just faster work, it is different work.

We are still spending a lot of time comparing tools. Should we use ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude, or Gemini? Which one has the newest feature? Which one is the smartest this week?

Those decisions matter, but they aren’t the big strategic question. Tools will keep changing. Features will leapfrog one another. The tool you love today may work completely differently six months from now.

What comes next isn’t really about the tool. It is about how we work.

Most organizations are currently trying to place AI on top of existing processes. We look at a task we have done the same way for years and ask how AI can help us complete it faster.

But what if the better question is whether that task still needs to exist?

Why do we still have this meeting? Why are we building a report no one uses to make a decision? Why are three people reviewing and reorganizing information before it reaches the person who actually needs it? Why are we still doing work that was created to solve a limitation we no longer have?

We are used to measuring progress by what we add: more tools, more dashboards, more processes, more reports, more training.

Real transformation may be better measured by what disappears.

A meeting that no longer needs to happen. A report no one has to manually build. An approval step that adds time but not value. A process that made perfect sense five years ago but no longer does.

The goal is not to use AI everywhere. The goal is to remove unnecessary work and make room for more meaningful work.

Most of our companies, departments, and roles were not intentionally designed for the technology available today. They were built layer by layer. A process was added because something went wrong. A spreadsheet was created because two systems didn’t communicate. A weekly meeting appeared because people couldn’t easily access the same information. A role inherited responsibilities from someone who had inherited them from someone else.

Then AI arrived, and our first instinct was to add another layer.

But what if we stepped back and started fresh?

Ask yourself this:

If I started my role, department, or company tomorrow, with everything now available to me, what could it look like?

Would you organize the team the same way? Would you create the same reports and hold the same meetings? Would customers move through the same experience? Would your people spend their time on the same tasks?

What would you keep? What would you change? What would you stop doing altogether?

This isn’t about replacing every person with technology. It is about questioning the work before we automate it.

Sometimes AI should help us complete the work faster. Sometimes it should help us do something we could never do before. And sometimes it should help us realize that the work no longer needs to exist at all.

The organizations that lead in this next era won’t necessarily be the ones using the most AI tools. They will be the ones willing to rethink what work can be.

One day, we may stop talking about “using AI” altogether. We will simply talk about how we solve problems, serve people, make decisions, and build organizations capable of things that once felt impossible.

And maybe we won’t need AI conferences anymore. Because AI won’t be somewhere we go. It will be woven into everything we do.

What do you think?

I really enjoyed my conversation with James Carman, CTO of Calibrity.

Cancel the SaaS contract and vibe code it yourself? In this episode, host James Carman talks with Kendra Ramirez, CEO of KR Digital and a Claude ambassador who's been building bots since 2018, about where AI actually earns its keep for business leaders. They find the line between a fast prototype and production-grade software, when off-the-shelf tools like Copilot, Claude, and ChatGPT are all you need, and why the smartest first move is often to audit your tech stack before you spend a dollar on something new.
