The coffee table is one of those things that can really make or break a room. Too many things and it looks junky, too little and it feels cold. There's a fine balance and I think I've finally narrowed down the science behind getting it right.

A coffee table book is a must, they add texture, color, and personality all at once. I’ve bought so many over the years and these are the ones that have stayed. One tip: take the dust jackets off some of them and see what’s underneath. Sometimes the cover is cleaner and more beautiful without it.

A Black Bowl or Vase
A black bowl or small vase is always the grounding piece that brings the whole table together. It anchors everything and doubles as the perfect spot to add fresh flowers when you want to bring some life into the space.
The Sculptural Piece
Every coffee table needs something that holds its own, a piece that doesn’t just sit there but actually becomes part of the room. The Tone Large Candle from Not Your Standard is exactly that for me. It’s large enough to command attention, the marble feel gives it real weight and presence, and it reads as sculpture first, candle second. When I designed it, that was the whole goal, something that didn’t just smell beautiful but looked like it belonged in an interior you’d find in a design magazine.
