The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare (Netflix) is a three-part series from director Skye Borgman and executive producer Joe Berlinger tracing the University of Idaho murders of Madison, Kaylee, Ethan, and Xana, from that November 2022 night through Bryan Kohberger’s arrest. I’ll be interviewing Berlinger himself this week — keep an eye out for that one. (July 29)
The Bombing of Pan Am 103 (Netflix) is a six-episode dramatization plus companion documentary covering the 1988 Lockerbie bombing that killed 270 people, still the deadliest terrorist attack in British history. The Last Guest of the Holloway Motel is a documentary on former footballer Tony Powell, who vanished from public life rather than come out to his teammates, now available to rent on Apple TV, Prime Video, and Fandango at Home. Look for my interview with the directors on Tuesday.
The Man Will Burn (HBO Max) is a four-part Burning Man docuseries, which wraps with “Mud Burn,” covering the 2023 rain and mud crisis that turned the festival into a survival story. (July 30)
World War II with Tom Hanks (History) has a two-part series finale, “No Surrender” and “Last Days of the Reich,” closing out this twenty-episode event tracing the entire arc of the war, narrated and produced by Hanks alongside Gary Goetzman and Jon Meacham. (July 27)
Reality Television
The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On (Netflix) airs the finale of this provocative social experiment where couples on the edge of engagement swap partners for a trial marriage before deciding whether to walk down the aisle or walk away for good. Chris and I watched the entire season, and will discuss the finale this week too. (Streaming)
In the City (Bravo) reunion wraps up its second and final part, with Amanda Batula and Kyle Cooke’s marriage under the microscope, and more fallout from the West Wilson/Ciara Miller triangle. Uncensored version drops the next day on Peacock. (July 28)
Roast My Rental (HGTV) has Leslie Jones roasting America’s worst short-term rentals. You know - cardboard curtains, a shower steps from the bed, the works — before she and Jasmine Roth flip them into something bookable in 72 hours.
Kitchen Undercover (Food Network) has chef Antonia Lofaso sending her sous chef Nestor Milian undercover into failing restaurants while she monitors from a secret command center, then steps in to fix what’s really broken. Series premiere. (July 28)
Unknown Serial Killers of America (Oxygen) spotlights the prolific killers who never got the true crime spotlight, with cases from Maryland, Miami, Phoenix, and the Twin Cities. (August 2)
