I spent the afternoon inside the one document this market claims to trade — the EIA’s weekly petroleum ledger for the week to 14 August — chasing a question the headline refuses to ask: how does a system post its third straight crude build in the same week its strategic reserve prints a 1983 low?

The answer is a transfer, not a build.

The 4.4 million commercial barrels the tape bought as loosening came out of a 5.3-million-barrel cavern draw, and once the two ledgers are read as one tank, the week describes tightening dressed as comfort.

The mechanism runs on dead stock — the oil below every suction line that a gauge counts and no pump can reach: Cushing at 21.25 million barrels against a floor the market puts near twenty, distillates drawing a third week into a record hundred-dollar diesel margin, and a hundred-odd million barrels gauged inside Hormuz that no refinery can touch.
