Kara Kull · ✨ You are Magic! ✨

Welcome to your weekly WSUAs where I round up all the things I currently won’t shut up about. It’s all joy and fun so we can start re-building that muscle and start your weekend off right!

Oh, have I got the cutest, feel good story for you today!

Earlier this year, I decided to start buying my books through either Book of the Month (my Christmas present every year from the hubs) or from our local bookshop. One of my fave Substack’s, Receipts from the Bookshop, chronicles every Friday at her shop and it made me realize - oh, my purchases are actually important (duh, I know).

So, every other week, I head to Westside Books to either pick up a book or order a new one and it’s become one of my favorite things to do. I’m getting to know the staff, it’s something to look forward to, and I love having a hard copy book I can share (and chat about) with friends.

A couple of weeks ago, I was chatting with the lovely Emmy about the aforementioned Substack and she said, “Oh, that reminds of this book I read called Remainders of the Day. I bet you’d love it.”

Well, guess what was waiting with my order when I went in to pick up my books? The book we discussed!

Emmy had hunted it down and put it with my order. I can’t even tell you how touched I was (and how I’ve told everyone I know!). THIS, my dear friends, is why we shop local, am I right?

Here’s to a touch of magic in your weekend.

xx. Kara

PS: You can also (finally!) pre-order Katie’s book, Receipts from the Bookshop, which is due out in September and looks so fun. OMG, could I say BOOKSHOP ANY MORE THIS WEEK?!?!?

This was the worst week for getting dressed because we had a SNOW DAY. Yes, in MAY.

It was very confusing. I’d already put away all of our heavy jackets and then had to try and find them, while navigating a backyard of falling tree branches. DRAMA.

It just threw off my whole week so I only really got dressed once (remember this red sweatsuit? I literally wore it every day because it’s all I still had in my closet!). Anyway, I’ll do better next week! Or not!

You can shop a few my favorite summer finds though right over here!

I feel like we did a lot of shopping this week (see: my guide to everything you’d want to give or get for Mother’s Day) so we’re going to go heavier on what to do / watch, k?

👗 OMG, did you see Devil Wears Prada 2 yet? Go see it!! It’s exactly what we all hoped it would be - more of our fave characters, fashion that makes you want to cry it’s so beautiful, and people that change a little bit, but not really all that much.

Also, I immediately wanted to see every outfit from the movie again so this Instagram was a god-send. Important things, people!!!

🐾 Speaking of DWP2, you know Anne Hathaway’s adorable boyfriend in it? Well, he’s in my favorite show EVAH that I’ve no doubt told you about MANY TIMES, but NO ONE has actually watched, which means I have no one to talk to about how adorable he is in the movie!

Puh-lease. Go watch Colin from Accounts so we can talk about how hilarious and weird it is and how cute Patrick Brammall (and his wife, Hannah Dyer) are.

📺 Let’s stick with TV shows, shall we? I’m about halfway through Hacks and it is glorious. I feel like we’re getting huge payoffs this season - it’s always astoundingly hilarious, but it’s so lovely to relax into Ava and Deborah’s friendship a bit and see how it’s evolved. I don’t want it to end!

🧵 I’ve stumbled across some pretty sweet Threads lately…

This music video is insane. It looks like it was filmed in one take, which the amount of rehearsal that would take is mind-boggling!

I literally can’t believe I’m going to type these words, but you should go look at this comment section where people have posted their photos of poorly translated stickers and signs they’ve bought online. I can’t properly explain how funny they are - you just have to look!

Okay, and comments on this one are on point as well. They even managed to get “Art Vandelay” in there, which IYKYK. 😜

This gal is everything.

🥇 We bought tickets to the Olympics in 2028!

I’m so impressed with myself because you gotta be really organized to actually get them and sign up NOW, but they’re doing one more drop this August. If you sign up, they’ll send you an email when they go on sale this summer and we can all go cheer together!

This week’s books seem to have a theme - women struggling to find their footing with serious twists at the end.

Okay, so I know you’ve seen Yesteryear everywhere and it’s for a good reason, I swear.

I’m gonna be honest, I didn’t like the first half that much and almost bailed out because the main character is so deeply unlikable. I’m so glad I didn’t. I read somewhere that Caro Claire Burke lands the plane with the ending; I’d say she Captain Sully’s it.

This book is about more than just a tradwife influencer finds herself in the 1855, living the hard life she’s glorified online. It’s a critique of the lose-lose situations women often find themselves in and what it means to find yourself at the mercy of a “perfect life.”

I wouldn’t say I enjoyed it, but I’m very glad I read it and feel shifted by it. I can’t stop thinking about it so let me know if you read it so we can discuss!

Okay, we have book #2 this week that absolutely sticks the landing.

The Marriage Portrait follows Lucrezia, a young royal in 16th century Italy, who’s forced at 15 years old (!) to marry a much older man when her sister dies unexpectedly.

It is excellent. It’s atmospheric, you feel like you learn a ton about what it would have been like to be a royal in the 1550s, and, again, you’re awed by how marginalized women have been through the ages and, yet, how resilient they are.

Totally recommend!

(Also, have you read Hamnet by the same author? I was thinking about reading it so let me know if I should!)
