Would you be alarmed if I said

I was driving the other day, and as I often do, I got distracted and didn’t process what my map app was saying until I had almost missed the turn. There was very little traffic, so I whipped over, just in the nick of time. It wasn’t a screeching swerve, just a last second lane change and simultaneous sudden slow down. Obviously, my passenger thought we were going to die, so I began speaking in a calm voice, “Everything is under control, nothing to worry about.”

I noticed, while scanning for nails in the road, a large caterpillar, trying to hurry up and get into traffic. I wasn’t going to be the one who killed a guy just trying to live, so I adjusted halfway through my not-a-swerve and did a small swerve to avoid murdering a bug. While my passenger clutched at every handle he could find, I hollered out, “Oops, sorry, there’s a caterpillar! We’re okay!”

Well, he let me know that it disturbed him greatly that I could see something as small as a bug while going faster than 40 miles an hour. I thought this was a super power. Like, how cool is it to blast by a giant beetle and know he’s making his way without my having killed him? I think that’s awesome.

My passenger has said this before, when I would call out the bugs or frogs or whatever was on the road, but I always thought he was joking. I guess not! I told him that I scan close, and a quarter-mile ahead, and check all the mirrors in a constant rotation, just like they taught us in bus driver school, but he’s not excited about my ability to see tiny things on the road. He said it was disturbing, and I laughed, because he always runs over nails. But then I felt bad, cause traumatizing my passengers isn’t my thing.

So, I need to know: Do you notice little crawly things on the road while you’re driving? And if you do, do you tell people about your super power? Are they impressed, or no?

I have been worried this bizarre pain I’ve been in for weeks would stop my progress, but this week, new treatments are working and I’ve been able to move so much more! I love it! I made new business cards, my first ones since neck surgery. That made me excited, then when the pain was under control, my dreams felt achievable again. Praise God!
