J.W. Donley · JW's Writerly Outpost

Ranger J.W. here. I hope all of you out there in the real-o-sphere are doing great and persevering against the insanities that are our times. I will say that I’m definitely getting tired of living through once in a generation events. But, enough of that. It’s time for a little update!

Things are fairly slow right now for Dark Forest Press. This is mostly due to having had a busy release schedule over the summer and day job stuff taking up some time. It’s a bummer that I didn’t get to do a lot of October events, but there is always next year. That said, the press is really building! David Beaumier’s book The Mourning Fields is doing really well as are Vicar of Fists by John Baltisberger and Crevasse by Clay Vermulm and the first two issues of the Scattered zine (Issue 1, Issue 2) are infecting the world one reader at a time. Like I said, it was a busy summer.

Now I’m letting things settle a bit before taking on any new big projects. The DFP pocketbook can only handle so much at a time. I am still moving forward with the next issues of Scattered. The next issue (# 3) will come out on January 1st, and it is looking to be another awesome issue with a story by P.L. McMillan, a poem by Brianna Malotke, a review from Leslie Edens, plus a few other goodies still in the works. Issue 4, coming out in April, is also looking gorgeous, but I will share more on that in the future.

The next book coming out from DFP should be Cairn: Book 2 of Voices from the Cold by Clay Vermulm. The release date is still to be determined, but it is looking like sometime early spring of 2026. I still plan to work on my own collection of short stories for release in summer of 2026. I’m also still in talks for a few other books for the remainder of 2026 and into 2027.

In my own writing, I’m working on my serialized novel I’m calling Project Fungalpunk. This is a weird futuristic fantasy horror novel involving world encompassing mushrooms, origami based technology, warring world factions, and magic. You can read each new chapter when it comes out every month on my Patreon.

I’m working on the occasional short story as well. It is nice to be writing again. Hopefully you’ll hear news of my stories being accepted elsewhere in the wild in the future. That’s the dream.

But that is the gist of things at the moment! I’m sure I will have more updates of more wild and curious happenings next month. Until then, stay amazing out there.
