JW's Writerly Outpost - November 2025

You may have noticed that this newsletter has a brand new name! Well, there is a good reason for that. After much deliberation, I decided it was time to split my newsletter into two parts. This one will be more of a place for writerly advice and updates on my own writing projects, and a new one (the new DFP Newsletter of DOOM!) will focus on updates about my indie press.

You may be wondering: What spurred this sudden change? Well, it is part of a big revamp I am doing to my services offerings. In case you haven’t already come across it, not only do I run a small press, but I also offer professional formatting and editing services. Also, I’ve put up a new site with another exciting project at tarot.jwdonley.com. Yes! I also read Tarot! I’ve been reading Tarot for a very, very long time. And over the years, I’ve specialized in helping authors and other artists break through their creative blocks. The Tarot is a wonderful way to work through these creative issues. The cards can give us new perspectives on projects or even act as inspiration to drive us forward in our artistic endeavors.

Moving forward, this will be a regular newsletter for fun writing advice and inspiration as well as updates on my current writing projects and whatever I may be reading at the moment.

Currently, I’m exploring some short story ideas while I take a break from the big novel project. I am losing steam on the novel project, and it’s time to take stock of how I want to move forward.

I am all over the place on my book reading at the moment. I’m currently in the midst of The Great and Secret Show as part of an effort to read everything by the amazing Clive Barker. I’ve also got bookmarks slowly travelling through a handful of books on Tarot and its relation to the Qabalistic Tree of Life. Of particular interest is Lon Milo DuQuette’s The Tarot Architect. This is a very deep book on the Western esoteric traditions tied into the structure of the Tarot deck.

And this is where the very first issue of JW’s Writerly Outpost will end.
