Six songs from six albums from the first six months of 2024.
- Amblare — “Starlight” — Found them by way of HUM, and it’s easy to hear why.
- Sons of Alpha Centauri — “Ephemeral” — If you listen to this and think “Hey, this kind of sounds like FAR mixed with some sick rock riffs,” then you and I think alike.
- Infant Island featuring Greet Death — “Kindling” — I have been a fan of Greet Death for a few years, but hadn’t heard Infant Island until now. The methodical, expansive opening makes way for a propulsive vice-grip in the middle, before cooling off and drifting away.
- Poppy — “New Way Out” — I love Poppy and I love her “heavier” stuff. Come for the hooks, stay for the crunchy breakdown, sing along.
- Head Automatica — “Bear the Cross” — New Head Automatica, New Thursday, if 2024 brings me new Desaparecidos I’ll be all set. I could see this being either the first of a bunch of new Head Automatica jams with a similar sound, or the only thing they release for another eighteen years.
- Thursday — “Application For Release From The Dream” — Fuck, man. First new Thursday track in over a decade? And it somehow sounds both exactly how I imagined a Thursday song released in 2024 would sound, but also totally fresh and absolutely of and for the moment. It’s just a moment, now.
Some bonus tracks that didn’t make the playlist proper for one reason or another but I still think are rad:
- Glassing — “Defacer”
- Dödsrit — “Nocturnal Fire”
- Dödsrit — “When Death Comes Reaping”
- Chappel Roan — “Good Luck, Babe!”
