SketchUp Lumion LiveSync: See Your Model Rendered the Moment You Build It

You spend forty minutes tweaking a roofline in SketchUp, export to Lumion, wait for the import to finish, check the render — and notice the overhang is still wrong. So you go back to SketchUp, fix it, export again. Wait again. This loop is not a workflow. It is a tax on your attention, and Lumion LiveSync exists specifically to eliminate it. When LiveSync is running, the change you make in SketchUp shows up in Lumion's fully rendered environment in seconds — not after a manual export, not after a coffee break, but as you work. This guide walks you through installing the plugin, preparing your model, managing materials, and avoiding the five mistakes that turn a real-time workflow back into the same old drag.

Every architect who has used SketchUp alongside a rendering engine knows the rhythm: model a change, export a file, import into the renderer, wait, assess, go back. On a simple model that cycle might take two minutes. On a complex project — a multi-story villa with detailed site work, furnished interiors, and landscaping — it can take ten or fifteen minutes per iteration. Multiply that by twenty design decisions in a working session and you have burned hours just moving data between applications.

The deeper problem is what happens to your thinking during those waits. Design iteration depends on rapid feedback. When feedback is slow, you stop iterating as freely. You start batching changes, which means you spend longer in each version before checking results. Errors compound. The render you finally see reflects not the last decision but a cluster of decisions you made over the past hour, and you can no longer isolate which one caused the problem.

LiveSync addresses this not by speeding up the export but by removing it entirely. The SketchUp extension maintains an open connection to Lumion. Geometry changes, material assignments, and camera movements flow through that connection automatically. Your Lumion viewport becomes a live preview of your SketchUp model, rendered in real time with your lighting, weather, and environment settings already in place.

Best for: Design development and client review sessions where rapid visual feedback matters more than final render quality.

Before installing, it helps to understand what the connection covers and where it stops.

LiveSync synchronizes geometry changes in real time. Move a wall, extend a slab, adjust a window opening — Lumion reflects it within a few seconds, depending on the complexity of the change and your hardware. Material assignments from SketchUp transfer as well: if you paint a face with a SketchUp material, Lumion recognizes the name and attempts to match it to a Lumion material, or falls back to the texture image you used.

The camera is also synchronized. When you orbit and pan in SketchUp, Lumion's viewport follows. This makes it straightforward to compose a view in SketchUp and see it immediately in a rendered environment — useful for presenting options to a client without switching applications.

What LiveSync does not do is transfer every Lumion setting you have made. Objects you have placed in Lumion — trees, cars, people, entourage — are not managed from SketchUp and will not be disturbed by geometry updates, but they are also not backed up into SketchUp in any way. Effects, sky settings, and lighting moods you set in Lumion persist independently of the SketchUp connection. LiveSync is a one-way pipe: SketchUp geometry flows into Lumion, not the other way around.

Watch out for: Large entourage-heavy Lumion scenes can slow the sync. If Lumion is managing thousands of placed objects alongside a live connection, expect lag on geometry updates.

The LiveSync plugin is free and available from two places: the SketchUp Extension Warehouse (search "Lumion LiveSync") and the Lumion support website at support.lumion.com. Both deliver the same .rbz file.

The current version as of 2026 is V3.60.786, which supports SketchUp 2020 through 2025 and Lumion 10.3 and newer. If you are running SketchUp 2025 with Lumion 2025, install the newer "Lumion View & LiveSync" package from the Extension Warehouse — this is a separate product that replaces the legacy plugin for the newest versions.

  1. In SketchUp, go to Extension Manager → Install Extension and select the downloaded .rbz file.

  2. Restart SketchUp when prompted.

  3. A new Lumion LiveSync toolbar will appear. If it does not, go to View → Toolbars and enable it.

  4. Open your Lumion project. Your model does not need to already be imported — LiveSync handles the initial import automatically.

  5. In SketchUp, click the Start LiveSync button (the green play icon in the toolbar).

  6. Lumion will detect the connection and import your SketchUp model into the current Lumion scene.

The first import can take several minutes depending on model size. Subsequent geometry updates are incremental and much faster — typically three to fifteen seconds for moderate changes.

Pro tip: Before clicking Start LiveSync, make sure your Lumion project is already open and on the scene you want to use as your base. If Lumion is on the home screen when the connection starts, it will create a new project, which is rarely what you want mid-session.

A poorly organized SketchUp model that imports passably via .skp file can become a performance nightmare over LiveSync. The connection amplifies any structural inefficiency because updates are sent continuously rather than once.

Place your model at the origin. Lumion uses the SketchUp origin (0,0,0) as the anchor point when it imports. If your model is far from the origin — a common result of importing a site plan with real-world coordinates — Lumion will place it far from its scene center, creating floating-point precision errors and strange clipping behavior. Before starting LiveSync, use Model Info → Geolocation or move your model manually to sit near the origin.

Reduce face count before connecting. Lumion has to process every polygon in your model. Components that contain high-poly geometry imported from 3D Warehouse — furniture, vehicles, trees — can double or triple your polygon count. Replace heavy components with SketchUp proxy blocks for the LiveSync session and swap them for detailed versions only in final renders.

Weld loose geometry into components and groups. Bare edges and loose faces outside any container are sent to Lumion as a single flat mesh with no instancing benefits. Wrapping geometry in components also allows Lumion to instance the objects, which is dramatically more efficient when you have repeated elements like windows, balustrades, or columns.

Use consistent material names. Lumion maps incoming materials by name. If the same wall color appears as "White-Wall," "white_wall," and "Wall-White" across different faces, Lumion treats these as three separate materials. Standardizing names before starting LiveSync means you can apply Lumion material settings once and have them propagate correctly.

One of the underused features of the LiveSync workflow is the relationship between SketchUp Tags and Lumion's object visibility. Any object assigned to a SketchUp Tag carries that Tag information into Lumion. You can then toggle Tags on and off in SketchUp and watch the corresponding geometry appear and disappear in your live Lumion view.

This becomes useful for design options. Assign Option A furniture to a "FurnishingA" Tag and Option B to "FurnishingB." Present both options in Lumion simply by switching Tags in SketchUp. No additional Lumion layers, no duplicate files, no re-import.

It is equally useful for phasing. Model all construction phases in one SketchUp file, with each phase on its own Tag. Toggle phases to show clients how a site evolves from demolition through completion, all within the same live-rendered Lumion environment.

Pro tip: Create a master tag called "PRESENTATION" and assign all elements you want visible in Lumion to it. Leave construction details, annotations, and section cut geometry on a separate tag that stays off during LiveSync sessions. Your Lumion view will stay clean without having to manually hide layers each time.

Material synchronization is the part of the LiveSync workflow that most often surprises new users — both positively and frustratingly.

What transfers well: SketchUp materials that carry a texture image. Lumion reads the texture file and applies it as the base color in its Metalness/Roughness material model. If your SketchUp material uses a 1024x1024 or 2048x2048 JPEG texture, it will appear in Lumion without any extra steps.

What transfers poorly: SketchUp solid colors without textures. Lumion receives these as a flat-colored material with no roughness or reflectance properties, which tends to look plastic and unconvincing in renders. For any material you care about in the final output, go into Lumion's material editor after the first import and assign a proper Lumion material (brick, concrete, timber, glass) rather than relying on the transferred SketchUp color.

What does not transfer at all: SketchUp material opacity beyond the initial import. Transparent materials like glass may import correctly the first time, but subsequent LiveSync updates do not always preserve transparency settings. Set glass transparency in Lumion's material editor after the initial import and treat it as a Lumion-managed property from that point forward.

Best for: Using LiveSync to establish geometry and composition, then spending a focused session in Lumion's material editor to build the look you want. Treat the two applications as partners: SketchUp owns the geometry, Lumion owns the surface quality.

Problem: Lumion imports the model but updates stop responding. This usually means the connection has silently dropped. Click "Stop LiveSync" in SketchUp, wait five seconds, then click "Start LiveSync" again. Lumion will reconnect and perform an incremental update without reimporting the full model.

Problem: The model appears at the wrong location in Lumion. Your SketchUp model is not placed near the origin. Stop LiveSync, move the model to sit near (0,0,0) in SketchUp, and restart the connection. Lumion will re-anchor to the correct position.

Problem: Every small change causes a full scene reload. This happens when too much geometry lives outside components or groups. Wrap your model geometry into containers, reload LiveSync, and updates should become incremental.

Problem: Materials look washed out or plastic in Lumion. You are relying on transferred SketchUp colors rather than assigning Lumion materials. Open Lumion's material editor and replace the flat colors with proper PBR materials from Lumion's library.

Problem: Camera synchronization is jumpy or delayed. Camera sync is CPU-intensive. If your machine is struggling, disable camera sync in the LiveSync toolbar and use SketchUp Scenes mapped to Lumion cameras instead. This approach is less fluid but more stable on lower-spec hardware.

LiveSync is not a final render tool. It excels at design iteration and client conversation, but the imagery it produces in real time is not the same quality as a Lumion Movie or Photo render. When you have finalized geometry through LiveSync and are ready for final output, stop the connection and work in Lumion directly.

At the handoff point, walk through your Lumion scene and:

  1. Confirm all materials are assigned proper Lumion settings — not just texture-carried SketchUp paints.

  2. Add entourage (trees, people, vehicles) now that the geometry is stable.

  3. Set your lighting mood, sky settings, and weather.

  4. Use Lumion's effects system (reflections, depth of field, lens flare, fog) for final polish.

  5. Run your Movie or Photo render at output resolution.

The geometry you developed through LiveSync is already in Lumion — you are not starting over, only finishing. This division of labor, SketchUp for geometry decisions and Lumion for rendering decisions, is what makes the workflow genuinely efficient rather than just technically interesting.
